Homer Rutherford, age 78 of LaFollette went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 13, 2018.  

He was a member of PleasantRidge Baptist Church.  Homer retired from LaFollette Medical Center after 48 years of service.  He was the 2nd District School Board Member for 20 years, father of year in 1982, and was in the Ol’ Smokey Outdoor drama for 4 years.  Homer also named the White Way Plaza, worked for X10 in the Oak Ridge Laboratory, little league president in the 1970’s.  He has the Homer A.Rutherford Learning Academy named after him, which is located in the Old East LaFollette Elementary.  Homer modeled on the riverboat in Knoxville in his latter days, enjoyed gardening, painting, and his family.  He received his bachelor’s degree in teaching at Lincoln Memorial University.

He is preceded in death by parents Thomas Jefferson and Martha (Branam) Rutherford; son Steve Rutherford; brothers Granville, J.C., and Paul Rutherford; sisters Ida Goins and Myrtle Wilson.

He is survived by wife of 58 years and high school sweetheart Doris Rutherford of LaFollette; sons Richard Rutherford, Marvin Rutherford & wife Cathy, Jason Rutherford & wife Heather, all of LaFollette; sister Rose Cadle of Illinois; special nephew John Goins; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday, May 16th at Cedar Hill Baptist Church followed by funeral service at 7 PM with Rev. Ronnie Arnold and Rev. Jeff Evans officiating.  Friends and family will meet 1:45 PM Thursday, May 17th at Martin Wilson Funeral Home to go in procession to Powell Valley cemetery for the 2:30 PM interment.
