JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – The 2011-2012 District 3 Girls Basketball Champions were all smiles during the honor ceremony and banner hanging held during the half time of the boy’s game on Tuesday night. Afterwards, members of the 2012 team hung out in the girl’s locker room with this year’s team.  Coach Ryan Browning and Coach Brad Honeycutt had some special words for the team.

Amber Young, one of the 2012 players  said it was awesome to have the ceremony and banner hanging eight years after the game.

“I think it’s great, my kids got to come and see it,” Young said. She also said she “remembered  every second of the overtime of the game, as well as nearly “tackling Shayla” when they finally won.

The Campbell County Lady Cougars claimed the district’s regular season and tournament championships back in 2012; it was only the second time in 45 years that Campbell County won the district championships. Ryan Browning was the head coach at that time. Currently he serves as the assistant coach.

Coach Ryan Browning (in the forefront) and Coach Brad Honeycutt (foreground) discussed the 2012 game with the team after the honor ceremony on Tuesday evening.

According to Browning, the 2012 game was an exciting one, especially when it went into overtime.

He said that particular team was a “great mix of talent with good ballers, good shooters and a real good mix of different style players.” Browning had set the district championship win as the “one big goal of the year and the girls pulled it off.”

The Lady Cougars played Anderson County for the big win with quite the dramatic overtime finish.

“Anderson County had sent it into overtime, but Campbell County hit some free throws and did good in overtime to lock down the victory,” Browning said.

Courtney Morris was one of the players to make an amazing free throw at the end of the game.

Courtney Morris, center, talks candidly about the 3 point shot she made during the 2012 championship.

“I remember it being a real nail biter and when we won, Kristin nearly tackled me,” Morris said.

“Courtney could literally shoot 3 pointers from the half court,” Browning said.

Coach Browning told the 2012 team how special it was to see them all again.

“This crew is special to me. You all were determined to win that district championship and it was an honor to coach you all. You all have a special place in my heart,” Browning said. He also said he wanted to thank Coach Brad Honeycutt for putting the honor ceremony together.

Coach Honeycutt said he had wanted to do the banner hanging and dedication for the last two years.

“It’s special to be a part of something like this. You all got a banner up there and unless an earthquake tears that thing down, that banner is always going to be there,” Coach Honeycutt said.

One Reply to “2012 Lady Cougars honored at Tuesday’s game”

  1. I was present at that game like all games that I have attended since the school was opened. It was a great game, and like has been said a “nail-biter.” The Lady Cougars have always been special to me. We may have not won the championships like an Oak Ridge school, but I feel we are just as good now and always. I am a die-hard Cougar fan win or lose. I love my Cougars and Lady Cougars. “GO COUGARS GO.”
