JACKSON, TN (WLAF)  — Walters State clinched its 11th straight regular season conference title on Saturday, taking down Jackson State 58-56 to finish off the regular season.

With the win, the Lady Senators finished the season with a 19-9 record, going 16-2 in the Tennessee Community College Athletics Association (TCCAA). Walters State wrapped up their regular season campaign on a six- game winning streak.  Former Campbell County Lady Cougar Haley Comer tallied four points, two steals and three rebounds in 26-minutes of action on a night where every point had to count in the close win.

WSCC was led in the game by Paris Mullins, who totaled 17 points, going 7-10 from the free throw line. Mullins also had 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Jamya Rogers added nine points while Alexis Trice came off the bench with eight points. Trice had seven rebounds as well while Blayre Shultz had six assists.

As a team, Walters State shot 22-55 from the field for 40 percent and out-rebounded the Green Jays, 41-35. The Lady Senators scored 34 points in the paint and had 21 bench points.

It was a close first quarter with both teams going back and forth. Trice had six points in the quarter while Mullins had four. Trice hit a shot at the buzzer, and the Lady Senators led 14-13 after one.

The second quarter was just as tight as the first, with the Lady Senators once again outscoring the Green Jays by a point. The lead changed nine times in the quarter, with Walters State up 32-30 at the half on a Kiera Hill shot with two seconds to go.

Defense took over in the third quarter with 20 combined points being scored on both sides. Jackson State took control late in the frame and led by four at the end of the third quarter.

Taking that momentum, the Green Jays continued their push in the fourth quarter, taking a seven-point lead. But the Lady Senators wouldn’t go away. Led by Mullins, Walters State kept the game close and took the lead back with 3:41 remaining. From there, the Lady Senators were able to make their free throws down the stretch, holding on for a two-point win.
