COLUMBIA, TN (WLAF) — Dyersburg State took the lead in the second quarter and never relinquished it in their TCCAA/Region VII semifinal against Walters State. In spite of holding the Lady Eagles to just 10 points in the final frame, the Lady Senators fell 75-67.

WSCC (20-10) sees its 2019-20 season come to an end with the loss, breaking a streak of TCCAA/Region VII tournament championships and NJCAA National tournament appearances going back to 2012.

The Lady Senators put three players in double figures, with Jamya Rogers and Paris Mullins both finishing with double-doubles as they battled to keep their season alive. Rogers racked up 23 points with 10 rebounds. Mullins put in 17 and raked off 13 boards. Haley Comer scored 11 points.

Comer, the former Campbell Lady Cougar, fouled out after only 27-minutes of action.  The freshman’s final line reads 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Comer was three for three beyond the arc.

Walters State outrebounded Dyersburg State by a significant margin, 38-25 and shot at 41.9 percent, but the Lady Eagles were hot as well, especially early, as they went 44.6 percent from the floor.

Amaria Pugh led Dyersburg State with 24 points. Kira Lowery scored 18 to go with eight assists, six steals and five rebounds.

WSCC took an early 4-0 lead thanks to buckets from Rogers and Mullins, but Dyersburg tied it up on a layup from Morgan Terry and a jumper from Sinetra Jones that sparked a 12-0 run that kept the Lady Senators down on the scoreboard until they clawed their way back ahead midway through the second period. Rogers hit a three with 6:11 on the clock to go up 30-29.

A jumper from Jones would give the Lady Eagles back the lead.

Rogers knotted the game up 32-32 a minute later, but a layup from Lowery would put Dyersburg back on top for good as they finished out the first half outscoring Walters State 14-6 over the second quarter’s final five minutes.

DSCC kept a double-digit margin most of the third period. The Lady Senators cut it to eight on a Quentarra Mitchell layup less than a minute into the fourth, but Dyersburg was able to stretch it back out again with a layup and two free throws from Amaria Pugh.  (3/03/2020-6AM)
