Lila May Jones Grand Slover

Lila May Jones Grand Slover born May 15, 1917, Carroll, Nebraska; died December 28, 2016, Lititz, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Howell Pugh Jones, a Welshman, and Grace Darnell, whose family dated back to the founding days of this country. Like so many other ambitious farm girls, Lila migrated to Washington and in 1941 joined the recently established Office of Price Administration. She married a civil servant, who shortly thereafter went off to war, leaving her with an infant son. In the post-war years, she was a diplomat's wife with two more sons. She resided abroad in Lima, Peru, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Back in Washington, she served as social secretary to the glamorous Marjorie Merriweather Post, owner of General Foods. Subsequent positions included Executive Secretary, Sheet Metal Workers International Association, and Legislative Secretary to US Senator James McClure. Divorce ended her first marriage. She retired with her second husband, Clarence Otis Slover, to a Tennessee homestead, where she continued to live alone after his death in 2005 until 2013. She is survived by Stanley I and Nancy L. Grand, Scranton, PA; Jon Thomas Grand and Noreen Richards, Lake Bluff, IL; and Robert James and Melanie Grand, Springfield, MO; along with four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Surviving siblings include Hayden Clair Jones, Shenandoah IA; William (Bob) Lewis, Neosho, MO; and Rita Goss, Crowley, TX.

Lila loved animals in general and cats in particular. There was always room for one more orphaned kitty. Music and art as well were close to her heart. In her younger days she spent untold hours playing the piano and certain melodies are fused forever with her memory. She was a fine amateur painter and ceramicist whose works are cherished by those who knew her.  She was a remarkable person: strong, willful, adventurous, tenacious. She was always a lady.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at New Canaan United Baptist Church in Pioneer, Tennessee. Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 Noon with Rev. In Davenport, Iowa, she did office work and especially enjoyed their public transportation system. She lived in Jacksboro and LaFollette and worked for Goodwill Industries for a short time. Clara Belle Prim

Clara Belle Prim, age 82 of LaFollette went home to be with the Lord on December 23, 2016. She was a member of Fordtown Baptist Church. Clara was preceded in death by her father Bailey McGhee, mother Bessie McGhee and twin brother Clifton McGhee. She leaves to mourn her passing daughter Tammy Hill and husband Darrell; son Robert Prim Jr. and wife Shirley; grandson Jerrod Prim; sisters Lula Belle Meredith and husband James, Margie McGhee and Patricia McGhee; brothers Hildred (Sonny) McGhee and wife Carmelita, Glenn McGhee and wife Brenda, Hobert McGhee and wife Jewell, Shirley McGhee and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Clara was born on October 7, 1934 in Shea, TN to Bailey and Bessie McGhee. She and her twin brother Clifton were delivered by Dr. Roscoe Pryse, who gave Clara her middle name of Belle in honor of his wife, Sammie Belle Pryse. Unfortunately, Clifton died of polio at the age of two. In the mid-1980s Clara was diagnosed with terminal cancer colon cancer, from which she was divinely healed after being given only a year to live. In 2001 she was diagnosed with Leukemia but again continued to thrive thanks to her unwavering faith in God, a good doctor, and medicine that kept her cancer in remission. Clara never became bitter or depressed over her health challenges; on the contrary throughout her life she maintained a positive and sweet demeanor that won the trust and hearts of everyone she met. Clara was a friend to many and never met a stranger. She worked for almost 20 years at St. Mary’s/ Tennova Health and Rehab where she was loved by both patients and staff. She enjoyed her work immensely and felt it was her calling in life to care for the patients to the best of her ability. It was not unusual for to arrive at work an hour or two early during which time she would visit with the patients before her shift started. In 2002 she was named Caregiver of the Year by the facility. Clara very much enjoyed traveling, especially anytime flying was involved; she even experienced every flyer’s dream of getting bumped up to first class on one particular flight! Clara was a nurturing, loving mother, and the rock on which family members and friends depended for many years. She was unfailing in her love and devotion to family and friends and loved attending church at Fordtown Baptist Church. She was also a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having been initiated into the order in June 1957. The family is deeply grateful for the kind, compassionate employees of Caris Healthcare for the outstanding level of care they provided at the end of Clara’s life; In addition, Clara’s sisters Pat and Margie McGhee were instrumental in Clare’s care; Pat unselfishly lived with Clara 24/7 to take care of her, and Margie ran errands and did the shopping for Clara, and assisted Pat in the day-to-day care of Clara.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Campbell County Cancer Association, 210 East Beech St. LaFollette, TN 37766.

Michael Brian Kress

Michael Brian Kress of Knoxville, a brief resident of Summit View of Rocky Top passed from this life December 7th after a prolonged illness.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Yoder Kress, his father, Marvin C. “Jack” Kress, his youngest daughter, Kristy, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his mother, Frances Colgan Kress, his sister Laura, and his children Angela, Adam and Kristopher Kress.

The date of Mike’s death befitted a military man. That same date in 1917 the US declared war on Austria and MacArthur landed troops into France.  It is most remembered, however, for the tragic loss of thousands of American lives during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor December 7th, 1941, leading to the US declaration of war against Japan the following day.

Mike attended Knoxville Catholic High School and joined the Marines at 17.  He spent 31 months fighting in Vietnam on two tours of duty. During that time he fought in Cambodia on a regular basis, a place where he and his fellow Marines suffered mightily because their clandestine troop movements could not be supported and resupplied.

He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for Heroic Achievement on February, 19, 1969, when Company C Second Platoon came under heavy ambush on a patrol through A Shau Valley. He maneuvered his machine gun team to a forward position, directed intensive fire and moved through the fire-swept terrain for ammunition supplies with compete disregard for his own personal safety.  He rendered emergency aid to men so the corpsman could tend to the more seriously wounded.  He's credited for contributing significantly to the defeat of the enemy and inspiring other Marines by his bravery and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, upholding the finest traditions of the Marine Corps.  He was just twenty two years old.  As with so many other military men, his service and sacrifice was given no recognition during his lifetime.

Father Joseph Reed of Sacred Heart Cathedral will officiate at a memorial service with military honors at the Veterans Cemetery on East Governor John Sevier Highway on Thursday, December 22, at 12:30 p.m., where Mike’s ashes, along with those of his late wife, will be placed in a columbarium.

The family would like to thank the kind and caring folks at Avalon Hospice, Summit View of Rocky Top, and Hatmaker Funeral Home in Rocky Top, as well as Dr. Elizabeth A. Bishop at the William C. Tallent Veterans Clinic in Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Mike’s name to any of your area’s local programs helping veterans.  He would have liked that very much.

“Rest in peace, shipmate. You stand relieved. We have the watch.”
