Charles Henry Stanley

Charles Henry Stanley (90) born June 24, 1924, or as he put it “the year the cherry tree blew down” in Wise, Virginia, passed away on November 6th, 2014 after  an entrenched battle against old age, at Cumberland View in Jacksboro, Tennessee.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Estelle Stanley of Wise Virginia, his sisters, Will (Tucson, AZ), Rita (Dale City, VA), Katherine (San Diego, CA), and his oldest daughter Paula of Jacksboro, TN.  Growing up in the coal fields of southwest Virginia, Charles attended school and held various jobs during the depression to help support his family until he was drafted in 1943 to join 1.2 million of his closest friends in a visit to Europe as part of the 16th Armored Division of Patton’s Third Army.  At the end of the war, he requisitioned a jeep and proceeded to tour southern France, Germany and Austria before disembarking to return to the United States and an honorable discharge.  His stories of his last three weeks in Europe were the subject of pride and embellishment by Charles for years, to the fond memories and amusement of his friends and family, and remain so today.

Upon returning home to Wise in 1946, he awoke to see a young woman in a red dress standing outside the beauty shop across the street and never let her out of his sight for 68 years.  He and his wife, Aldeane, had three children they raised in a home filled with care, love, books and humor.  In spite of the challenges and trials that life puts before everyone, he was a role model of tolerance and support for the entire family, and his last words were of his love for Aldeane.  He led a Christian life by example.

Charles supported his family as a coal miner in various mines in Virginia and became a federal mine inspector for the Mine Safety and Health Administration in 1969, moving to the Jellico field office and he and the family have lived in Jacksboro, TN since that time.  He eventually became the supervisor of the Jellico field office until his retirement.  After retirement, he proceeded to stay active, travelling with Aldeane, remodeling every room in their home twice, and teaching his grandchildren bad habits.  He also had a love of genealogy and history; tracing his ancestry back to Robert the Bruce, and was a walking history of coal mining and families of this region.  He was a regular breakfast club member at Hardee’s and missed going when his condition would no longer allow him to make the trip.

Charles is survived by his wife Aldeane, daughter Elizabeth Lamb and husband James Lamb, and son Bill and wife Gale Stanley.  He has five grandchildren, Manderley Swain, Travis Stanley, Ronnie Byrd, Anthony Douglas and Devin Douglas, five great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the ladies of the Sun Valley Terrace at Cumberland Nursing Home for their care and kindness; and to the staff of the 2nd floor of Tennova LaFollette for their support and care of Charles and his family.  All of you helped him to make this journey with grace and dignity.

Emma Wier Cooper

Emma Wier Cooper, passed away on October 11, 2014 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Clinton, Tn.  Emma and her twin Rita were born in LaFollette on March 14, 1947.

She and her family lived in Jacksboro until 1955 and then moved to Oak Ridge. They continued to live in both towns with her father working at Oak Ridge Utility District in Oak Ridge and running and working a large farm in  Jacksboro. She stayed in Oak Ridge with her husband Ralph B. Cooper Sr. after her parents retired back to Jacksboro in 1969.

Emma is preceded in death by her husband Ralph B. Cooper Sr.: her loving parents, Charley and Lucille Hatmaker Wier; brother, Robert Wier (Betty); sister, Marian Wier  Miracle (Larry); brother, Sambo Wier (JoAnne); twin sister, Rita Bell Wier Moulas; nephews, Sammy Wier Jr., Charley Wier & Jerry Wier; niece, Lucille Poland Smith Ellis.

She is survived by her only son Ralph B. Cooper Jr. of Tennessee, 2 granddaughters, her sister, Dianne Redmon (Grover) of Jacksboro; sister, Kathy Wier Mercier(Roger) of Bristol, RI; brother, Bill Wier (Mary) of Chattanooga, Tn.; brother, Ronnie Wier (Carmen) of Puerto Rico, 16 nieces and nephews and a close friend Dot Hillard of Oak Ridge.

Emma spent most of her life in Oak Ridge next door or with her twin sister Rita . They were always very close.  They shared their love of dogs and cats and had several. They rode motorcycles, went fishing & boating, did outdoor gardening and Emma did upholstery, mostly in earlier years. In the late 80's, she dedicated her life to caring for her mother, Lucille Wier, when she became ill with Alzheimer disease. The 24 hour care at Emma's home was over a period of 3 years and was the best care anyone could have ever received. She was so dedicated to her mother and recently, before her death, said that it was the best part of her whole life.  Emma could always cook like her mom and make all her desserts taste "just like moms".  She had been at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Clinton since the spring of this year and lived her last days there being loved for her generous ways and funny sense of humor.

Her twin, Rita, also went to the nursing home in the spring after a serious illness and stay at Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. She continued to be in and out of the hospital, but could not recover from her illness and passed away May 5, 2014.

Before the sisters went to the nursing home, their older sister, Dianne Redmon and her husband, retired to Jacksboro from Lowell, IN. Dianne became their sister, mother and caregiver. They were semi-independent at the beginning, but became less able.  Dianne was their housekeeper, shopper, accountant, taxi driver, nurse, and in general loved them above and beyond.

Emma was also known as Emily Anne.  Later in life, she found out that her birth certificate listed her name like that.  She then chose to go by Emily Anne.  Her parents had always told her that her name was Emma Nell.  As far as her family and childhood friends were concerned, she was Emma Nell.

The family is inviting all of her friends and all who loved her to a Memorial Service being held 7 PM to 9 PM  Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Cross-Smith Funeral Home, 300 E. Central Ave., LaFollette, Tn.  Rev. John Wiseman will be officiating.

Bill Robinson (William Sears Robinson)

William Sears Robinson of Jacksboro passed away suddenly Sept. 16, 2014 at the age of 91.  He was born May 10, 1923 to William Mose  and Elizabeth Neal Robinson of Harrogate Tn.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years,  Joyce Wier Robinson, daughter  Jeanne Higdon and husband  Tommy of Jacksboro, sons, Dr. Dan Robinson and wife Barbara of Oak Ridge, David Robinson and wife Gloria of Andersonville, John Robinson of  Jacksboro, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Caryville, Tennessee.

He grew up in Harrogate Tn and attended Powell Valley High School.  He left school to move north to Detroit to find work.  He was there when he received his draft notice.  He was inducted into the Army Air Force at Tazewell Tn.  He was sent to Georgia for   basic training and upon completion , he was sent to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion.  Like thousands of other young Americans he crossed the North Atlantic in an unarmed, unescorted troop carrier.  Due to the vast number of troops being assembled in England for the expected invasion there were not enough escort ships for all the troop carriers.  He was assigned to the 437th Troop Carrier Group. His outfit was one of the first launched on D-Day.  After the Allied Forces took the Normandy Beaches he went on to fight across Europe and was awardrd the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and medals for the American, European, and African campaigns.  According to the V.A. records he was the second most decorated W.W. II. soldier in Campbell County.  He loved his country and was very proud of his service to it.  He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He returned to Claiborne County and enrolled at Lincoln Memorial University, something he felt he could have never had done without the G.I. Bill.  He transferred to East TN State College and graduated with a degree in English and Education.  There he met fellow student Joyce Wier from Jacksboro, Tn.  They married the next year and celebrated their 62nd anniversary in March of this year.  After graduation, he took a job as teacher and principal at Valley Creek School in Claiborne County.  After a year he returned to E.T.S.U.  where he earned a Master’s Degree in education.  He was recruited to become principal of the new Stony Fork School along with his wife Joyce and six other teachers.  They opened the newly built school.  Along with the custodians, they literally unpacked the students’ desks from their crates.  He became beloved by his students and all the  people of that area.  When Stony Fork closed fifty years later, he was invited back as the guest of honor and graduation speaker for the final high school class to graduate.  He considered this to be one of the most beloved honors he ever received.

From Stony Fork he was assigned to become principal of Wynn Habersham, another mountain school.  He served there for seven years at which time he was asked to become supervisor of elementary education in Campbell County.  He worked in that position for the remainder of his career.  In addition,  he also served as assistant superintendant of schools for several years before his retirement in 1983.  He had served thirty seven years in education.  During that time he took many additional  courses at U.T.  and attained further advanced degrees.

In about 1967,  he was elected to his first public office.  He was re-elected to the Campbell County Commission multiple times, ultimately serving for over 20 years.  While on county commission he championed the development and construction of Campbell County Comprehensive High School, the overhaul of the county pension system, and the establishment of rural medical clinics in the remote mountainous areas of the county.

In addition to his professional life and community service, he loved to farm, and raised cattle and tobacco for most of his life.  He was an avid reader, an accomplished writer,  and an excellent speaker.  He was a fifty six  year member of the Campbell County Lodge #778 of the Free and Accepted Masons .  He was a avid fan of The University of Tennessee Athletics.

His passions were the education of this region’s children and the assistance of the people of Campbell County.  His greatest love was his family.  He was extremely proud of them.    He and Joyce worked diligently to instill their values of integrity, perseverance, a strong work ethic, and a true appreciation of the freedoms he had seen so many young men die to preserve.  They taught thrift, frugality, fairness, and generosity to those less fortunate.  He was very highly respected by his colleagues and peers and beloved by his students and family.

Juanita Leach Elliott

Juanita Leach Elliott was born in Coal Creek, Tennessee on August 16, 1921 to Albert L. Leach and Lois Diggs Leach. She passed into Heaven on September 13, 2014 at the age of 93 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years Christy R. Elliott, her parents, infant sister Margaret Louise Leach, son-in-law Ralph Wormsley and daughter-in-law Hazel Elliott.  She leaves behind to rejoice in her home going her son, Chris Elliott (John), and her daughter and son-in-law Pat and Ken Shrull. She also leaves 4 grandchildren, Clark and Jody Wormsley of Knoxville, Krista and Jeff Little of Clinton, Leigh Anne and Chris Maye of Jacksonville, AL., Crissy and John Wilson of Lake City, and 4 great grandsons, Jordan and Mary Katherine Wormsley, Logan Little, Parker Wormsley and Garrett Little, 2 great great grandchildren, Cooper and Rileigh Maye of Al.

She lived in Lake City all of her life until moving into an assisted living community in Clinton in 2007. She enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in sports and went to the games when she could.  If she was asked about what she enjoyed doing she would say, “I love to do everything!”, and she and Christy always told people, “we didn’t miss much”! Everyone they met became a friend for life as they loved people.

She was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church in Lake City and enjoyed going to service when she felt good.  She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Lake City and was a 50 year member. Of all the things she loved to do it was the spending time with her family that made her the happiest. Going places, vacations, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, anytime that her family was around her was the best times of her life.

She and her husband moved to Meadow View Assisted Living Community in 2007 and when he passed away in 2011, she continued to live there until her passing. A very special thank you to all the administration and staff at Meadow View for their care and concern for her. She was a person of great carrying but could be a little sassy if things didn’t go her way. A zest for life and her way of telling a story could keep you laughing for hours. She was totally deaf for the last two years but knew everything that went on at Meadow View and would not hesitate to tell you about it! Pam Forgerty and Rachel Parrott were her go-to people, mostly she would go to Pam to tell on Rachel for making her walk. Anyone she came into contact with had a hard time forgetting her and her smile.

A special thank you to the staff of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for their loving concern and care for Juanita.  Dr. Michael Hilton and the nursing staff of 4 West went above and beyond to make her last days comfortable.

Funeral services for Juanita will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City (Rocky Top) with receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Logan Little and Rev.
