Bill Robinson (William Sears Robinson)

William Sears Robinson of Jacksboro passed away suddenly Sept. 16, 2014 at the age of 91.  He was born May 10, 1923 to William Mose  and Elizabeth Neal Robinson of Harrogate Tn.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years,  Joyce Wier Robinson, daughter  Jeanne Higdon and husband  Tommy of Jacksboro, sons, Dr. Dan Robinson and wife Barbara of Oak Ridge, David Robinson and wife Gloria of Andersonville, John Robinson of  Jacksboro, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Caryville, Tennessee.

He grew up in Harrogate Tn and attended Powell Valley High School.  He left school to move north to Detroit to find work.  He was there when he received his draft notice.  He was inducted into the Army Air Force at Tazewell Tn.  He was sent to Georgia for   basic training and upon completion , he was sent to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion.  Like thousands of other young Americans he crossed the North Atlantic in an unarmed, unescorted troop carrier.  Due to the vast number of troops being assembled in England for the expected invasion there were not enough escort ships for all the troop carriers.  He was assigned to the 437th Troop Carrier Group. His outfit was one of the first launched on D-Day.  After the Allied Forces took the Normandy Beaches he went on to fight across Europe and was awardrd the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and medals for the American, European, and African campaigns.  According to the V.A. records he was the second most decorated W.W. II. soldier in Campbell County.  He loved his country and was very proud of his service to it.  He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He returned to Claiborne County and enrolled at Lincoln Memorial University, something he felt he could have never had done without the G.I. Bill.  He transferred to East TN State College and graduated with a degree in English and Education.  There he met fellow student Joyce Wier from Jacksboro, Tn.  They married the next year and celebrated their 62nd anniversary in March of this year.  After graduation, he took a job as teacher and principal at Valley Creek School in Claiborne County.  After a year he returned to E.T.S.U.  where he earned a Master’s Degree in education.  He was recruited to become principal of the new Stony Fork School along with his wife Joyce and six other teachers.  They opened the newly built school.  Along with the custodians, they literally unpacked the students’ desks from their crates.  He became beloved by his students and all the  people of that area.  When Stony Fork closed fifty years later, he was invited back as the guest of honor and graduation speaker for the final high school class to graduate.  He considered this to be one of the most beloved honors he ever received.

From Stony Fork he was assigned to become principal of Wynn Habersham, another mountain school.  He served there for seven years at which time he was asked to become supervisor of elementary education in Campbell County.  He worked in that position for the remainder of his career.  In addition,  he also served as assistant superintendant of schools for several years before his retirement in 1983.  He had served thirty seven years in education.  During that time he took many additional  courses at U.T.  and attained further advanced degrees.

In about 1967,  he was elected to his first public office.  He was re-elected to the Campbell County Commission multiple times, ultimately serving for over 20 years.  While on county commission he championed the development and construction of Campbell County Comprehensive High School, the overhaul of the county pension system, and the establishment of rural medical clinics in the remote mountainous areas of the county.

In addition to his professional life and community service, he loved to farm, and raised cattle and tobacco for most of his life.  He was an avid reader, an accomplished writer,  and an excellent speaker.  He was a fifty six  year member of the Campbell County Lodge #778 of the Free and Accepted Masons .  He was a avid fan of The University of Tennessee Athletics.

His passions were the education of this region’s children and the assistance of the people of Campbell County.  His greatest love was his family.  He was extremely proud of them.    He and Joyce worked diligently to instill their values of integrity, perseverance, a strong work ethic, and a true appreciation of the freedoms he had seen so many young men die to preserve.  They taught thrift, frugality, fairness, and generosity to those less fortunate.  He was very highly respected by his colleagues and peers and beloved by his students and family.

Juanita Leach Elliott

Juanita Leach Elliott was born in Coal Creek, Tennessee on August 16, 1921 to Albert L. Leach and Lois Diggs Leach. She passed into Heaven on September 13, 2014 at the age of 93 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years Christy R. Elliott, her parents, infant sister Margaret Louise Leach, son-in-law Ralph Wormsley and daughter-in-law Hazel Elliott.  She leaves behind to rejoice in her home going her son, Chris Elliott (John), and her daughter and son-in-law Pat and Ken Shrull. She also leaves 4 grandchildren, Clark and Jody Wormsley of Knoxville, Krista and Jeff Little of Clinton, Leigh Anne and Chris Maye of Jacksonville, AL., Crissy and John Wilson of Lake City, and 4 great grandsons, Jordan and Mary Katherine Wormsley, Logan Little, Parker Wormsley and Garrett Little, 2 great great grandchildren, Cooper and Rileigh Maye of Al.

She lived in Lake City all of her life until moving into an assisted living community in Clinton in 2007. She enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in sports and went to the games when she could.  If she was asked about what she enjoyed doing she would say, “I love to do everything!”, and she and Christy always told people, “we didn’t miss much”! Everyone they met became a friend for life as they loved people.

She was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church in Lake City and enjoyed going to service when she felt good.  She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Lake City and was a 50 year member. Of all the things she loved to do it was the spending time with her family that made her the happiest. Going places, vacations, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, anytime that her family was around her was the best times of her life.

She and her husband moved to Meadow View Assisted Living Community in 2007 and when he passed away in 2011, she continued to live there until her passing. A very special thank you to all the administration and staff at Meadow View for their care and concern for her. She was a person of great carrying but could be a little sassy if things didn’t go her way. A zest for life and her way of telling a story could keep you laughing for hours. She was totally deaf for the last two years but knew everything that went on at Meadow View and would not hesitate to tell you about it! Pam Forgerty and Rachel Parrott were her go-to people, mostly she would go to Pam to tell on Rachel for making her walk. Anyone she came into contact with had a hard time forgetting her and her smile.

A special thank you to the staff of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for their loving concern and care for Juanita.  Dr. Michael Hilton and the nursing staff of 4 West went above and beyond to make her last days comfortable.

Funeral services for Juanita will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City (Rocky Top) with receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Logan Little and Rev. Joe Asa Mariner, 90--soldier, scientist, musician, husband, and father--died peacefully at his home in Los Alamos, N.M., on June 10, 2014, surrounded by family.

Mariner, who had lived in Los Alamos for 57 years, was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Jacksboro, Tenn., the son of George Washington Mariner and Nora Katherine Queener Mariner.  He grew up in Jacksboro, enjoying the company of his many cousins. He graduated from Jacksboro High School as valedictorian  in 1941.

He was in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, during World War II, serving  in New Guinea and the Philippines (on Luzon and Leyte). He spent more than 30 months in the South Pacific, working as a medical and administrative specialist. He was also assigned to Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters, and he worked in special intelligence throughout the Southwest Pacific.

After the war, he studied at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in medical science, chemistry, and physics. In 1955, he earned a doctorate from Northwestern University in Chicago. Subsequently, he took graduate courses in radiochemistry, advanced analytical chemistry, and computer science at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos.

During his career, he worked in high-level scientific positions in Illinois, Tennessee, and New Mexico. A partial list  of the positions he held shows that he worked at U.S. Steel Corp. in Chicago; at Studebaker Corporation, Aircraft Engine Division, in Chicago; at the Crane Company in Chicago; at Cramet, Inc., in Chattanooga, Tenn.; at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he was a staff member from 1958 through 1971; at the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Agency in Santa Fe, N.M.; at Bokum Resources Corporation in Santa Fe; at Assaigai Analytical Laboratory, Inc., in Albuquerque, N.M.; and at Eberline in Albuquerque. He also taught health physics-radiation protection, and he performed a radiation survey and environmental study at a reclamation site in New Jersey.

Science, however, was only part of his world. He began studying guitar at age 7 and gave his first performance at age 10. While he was in the Army, he gave concerts in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines.

In 1964, he was selected from among hundreds of applicants to attend the first U.S. master class of Spanish virtuoso classical guitarist Andres Segovia at Berkeley, Calif.

He played with Chet Atkins, Flatt & Scruggs,  Ferlin Husky, Roy Acuff, and other noted musicians from the Nashville area.

He gave guitar lessons to many, many people in Los Alamos, sharing with them his passion for music.

He was asked to do music for the movie "A  Gunfight," starring Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas (a movie filmed at the J.W. Eaves Ranch near Santa Fe), and his sons James and Ron were selected for parts in the movie.

He played for the grand opening of Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos; at the Fogelson Library at the College of Santa Fe; and at Tomasita's, a well-known restaurant in Santa Fe.

His family remembers him as a very special person--"a loving husband, father, and friend of many, known for his sharp intellect and wide-ranging interests as well as his kindness to everyone. He had a great love for music, reading, poetry, and, most of all, playing his guitar."

He was also active in his community.  He was a lieutenant colonel in the Military Order of World Wars, Franklin E. Miles Chapter, in Los Alamos; he was a member of the local Republican Party, playing for the annual meeting for many years and entertaining at GOP meetings for then-U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, State Rep. Jeannette Wallace, and others; he and his wife were active together in the Santa Fe Opera Auxiliary; and he frequently accompanied her at events of the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos, where she is a long-time member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, George Thomas Mariner, and his sister, Martha Louise (Lucy) Mariner Teague.

He is survived by Mary Louise (Hunter) Mariner, his wife for 67 years. They renewed their vows at the United Church in Los Alamos a few months before his death.
