No one is soliciting funds on behalf of the La Follette Police Department.  That’s according to LPD Chief Bill Roehl.  Roehl tells WLAF, “We’ve recently received a couple of calls where the caller is soliciting funds on behalf of police, and that this appears to be a scam.”  The Chief goes on to explain that the caller tells its potential victim that he is from Alexandria, Virginia.  However, the number they have used is the local area code, 423.

He believes they are spoofing telephone numbers which means they are causing the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of a call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station.  Chief Roehl adds that when he tried to call the phone number in question that it answers with a tone much like a fax machine.

The Chief and his officers are not aware of any national soliciting funding for law enforcement.  He urges that if you get such a call to simply hang up. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 06/26/2018-6AM)
