JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – With school still on summer break, the Campbell County Board of Education had little business to conduct at a short 30 minute July meeting Tuesday night. They did, however, receive some good news in the wake of devastating cuts in state funding due to a declining student population.  Watch the meeting HERE.

Director of Schools Jennifer Fields announced that the state board’s final BEP calculations show Campbell County will receive an additional $192,000 that will help offset part of the $1.8 million shortfall from the initial state estimates. The board will now determine how to distribute the additional money to soften some of the cuts to personnel and capital project funds that were made last month.

The board also agreed to vote next month on a motion to extiend  Fields’ contract for another year after the board has completed the evaluation process.

Fields  introduced Lori Adkins as the new elementary supervisor and Dr. Donna Singley, former Jellico High School principal, as director of special education. She added that test scores have been tabulated by the state and although not yet released to the public, she was “very pleased” with the results.

The board also learned from maintenance supervisor Stan Marlow that some of the heating and air units at four schools are in need of work before students return to classrooms. Marlow mentioned White Oak, Elk Valley and Wynn, along with Jellico as schools needing maintenance work.

The board also voted unanimously to approve the procedures for establishing principals and assistant principals for all schools along with procedures for setting the 10, 11 and 12-month annual salaries for those positions. A motion to approve a 10 month principal position at East LaFollette Learning Academy also passed 8-1 with Jeffrey Miller casting the only “no” vote. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/10/2019-6AM)
