VASPER, TN (WLAF) – Campbell County Deputy Zachary Daugherty responded on March 23 to a one car crash on I-75 around the 132-mile marker. It was alleged that the driver of the vehicle, Mary Elizabeth Akers, fell asleep and struck the barrier wall, causing the vehicle to flip. She allegedly told Daugherty she was not injured and was medically cleared by EMS at the scene.

During this time, Daugherty noticed an odor of alcoholic beverage coming coming from Akers. She has slurred speech and was unsteady on her feet. There were several empty cans of White Claw, an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle. Daugherty asked the woman if she had consumed any alcoholic beverages prior to operating the vehicle and she allegedly said she had consumed two alcoholic beverages three hours prior to driving, according to a report from the sheriff’s department.

A check of Akers license revealed her license were suspended for a DUI from North Carolina. When asked if she was aware her license was suspended, she said she was aware, and they were suppose to be reinstated in one month. Daugherty was advised Akers had two prior driving under the influence charges on her record.

After a series of field sobriety tests, Akers, 42, 220 Russell Cove Road, Waynesville, NC was arrested and charged with driving while suspended and driving under the influence(DUI). (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/30/2020-6AM)
