Steve Gulley

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – A dear friend of WLAF and native of Claiborne County, Steve Gulley received some hard news recently. Gulley a popular singer, songwriter, bandleader, and radio host in east Tennessee, announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He shared his news with friends on Facebook on July 26, that doctors had found a large mass on his pancreas that had metastasized into his liver and one lung. In further tests it appears to be in both lungs, and results from a biopsy are awaited before planning a course of treatment. After experiencing stomach discomfort, he sought relief from his primary physician, who ordered a series of tests to determine the cause. When the results of a CT scan showed the tumors, he was admitted to the hospital at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

He also shared on Facebook, “I will fight as hard as I possibly can to beat this and humbly ask for your prayers and love. Above all, as always, I will place my foot on the solid rock and my faith in my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the master physician and all things are possible through Him. Please pray for us during this time and know that we love you.”

Joseph Hensley who plays in the house band at Katie’s Restaurant has organized a benefit for Gulley. Hensley has attended Gulley’s acoustic music camp for five years, and his family has become like family to Hensley. When he heard of the news, he wanted to do something to help the family. He called Blue-Chip and told them what he wanted to purchase a Blue-Chip guitar pick like Steve uses for a fundraiser. Hensley was placed on hold and when they returned on the line he was told the company was willing to donate 10 picks that say “Steve Gulley 2020” and there will be no more made like them, according to Hensley. One of the picks will be auctioned off on Aug. 8 at Katie’s Restaurant during the benefit which starts at 6:30 pm.

The benefit will feature an auction, different singers/musicians and a variety of cakes and candies. Anyone who would like to donate can go to the GoFundMe account Helping Our Music Friend Steve Gulley created by Phil Leadbetter, go by Commercial Bank or mail a check to the bank to Steve’s account.

Katie’s Restaurant is on North Tennessee Avenue in La Follette.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 08/06/2020-6AM)
