JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Despite three weeks between games and a 14-day practice lay off for the Campbell County Cougars, the Orange-n-Blue scratched out a win for its first-year head coach Ernie Clawson on Thursday night on Brown Court. WATCH the games right HERE on demand.

“We’ve faced a lot of adversity. We had no legs, and our defense is not where we want it to be,” said CCHS Coach Clawson. His Cougars rang up their first win out of two games on the season 87 to 71 over the visiting Knoxville Ambassadors. “But anytime you can win, especially early in the year, it’s good,” added Clawson. Campbell improves to 1 & 1.

John John Long tallied 15 second half points and Seth Ward provided a third quarter spark as Campbell made plays, got stops and built on its lead to pull away for the 16-point win. The Cougars had their second scheduled game with Hardin Valley scrapped and had to hunt for a replacement opponent, and it ended up being the Knoxville Ambassadors.

Long’s career high 21 points led five double-digit scorers for Campbell. Spencer Boshears finished with 16 followed by Nate Walden’s 15, seven straight at one stage, while Devon Jones and Seth Ward each tallied 13. Zac Brady scored five as Bryson Horton and All-Region football player Will Lester had two points a piece. Noah Burden, Riley Faulkner and Gavin Newman contributed key minutes though failing to score.

The CAK Lady Warriors, a day of replacement opponent, maintained a double figure lead much of the night enroute to a 60 to 45 win over the Lady Cougars. The Lady Cougars are 1 & 2 on the young season.

Alyssa Brown led the Lady Cougars with 14 points while Izzy Proffitt chalked up a dozen despite being saddled with fouls much of the night. Cora Browning had eight for Coach Brad Honeycutt’s team followed by Kayleigh Jordan with five, Megan Asher with four and two for Erica Brock. Bailey Gillum and Keely Nelson played and did not score.

Campbell plays its first district game on Friday night at Clinton against Anderson. The Lady Cougars game starts at 6pm followed by the Cougars and Mavericks at 7:30pm.
