LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – “When I saw how well nurses worked with a friend of mine in the hospital and the difference they made for her, I knew right then that’s what I needed to be doing,” said Cumberland Gap Medical’s Sheena Byrd. Byrd is now a family nurse practitioner.

Sheena Byrd is typically in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The always smiling Byrd was well on her way to becoming a pharmacist when seeing the nurses in action that day made her realize that being a pharmacist wasn’t where she needed to be. Byrd knew she wanted to help people and started as a pharmacy technician and was headed toward becoming a pharmacist until that career path changing day.

The Jellico native, who now makes her home at Ca ryville, brings plenty of experience along with that hometown personal touch to Cumberland Gap Medical on East Central Ave. at North Cumberland Ave. She is a graduate of Jellico High, LMU, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, and ETSU. Byrd completed her masters in nursing degree at East Tennessee State.

Byrd spent several years as a registered nurse at Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. She’s been with Cumberland Gap Medical since July in another capacity making her move to FNP at the clinic a natural next step.

Cumberland Gap Medical, at Stop Light 10, is open Monday through Friday.

“Becoming an FNP enables me to be able to do more to help care for my patients,” she added. “I know how to access the issue and where to go with my patient, sort of a ground zero,” said Byrd.

From sniffles to sneezes and runny noses, coughs and sore throats or worse, Byrd is ready to help you get to feeling better. “If you have a chronic condition like high blood pressure or high cholesterol or diabetes, I am available to care for you,” said Byrd.

Byrd welcomes walk-ins and appointments at 423.201.9799. She is typically in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cumberland Gap Medical is open Monday through Friday. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 12/17/2020-6AM)
