JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – The game at Brown Gym was on the line as Number 32 towed the line with 12-seconds to go. His Cougars were clinging to a one point lead.

Sophomore Devin Jones calmly tossed in two free throws to give Campbell enough cushion should Halls hit a three to knot the game. The Devils missed, couldn’t launch a put back before time expired, and the Cougars began celebrating their 51 to 48 win on Tuesday night.

Jones was a seventh grader the last time Campbell won a district game at home. That was a 69 to 60 win over Central on Feb. 2, 2018. The win improves the Cougars to 2 & 5 and 1 & 3 in the district.

It was not an easy win for CCHS. Spencer Boshears was out, and John John Long nursed fouls all night.

Campbell was led by Jones 21 points. The southpaw was 12 for 14 from the stripe making his final eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Nate Walden settled into his comfort zone and poured in 15 points. Seth Ward, hustling every step of the night as usual, added nine. Long had three, Bryson Horton, who played in place of Boshears, chipped in two, and Riley Faulkner scored one on a night when every point had to count.

Coach Ernie Clawson called it a total team win with everyone contributing. David Adkins, Noah Burden, Will Lester, Garrett Medley all played but failed to score.

“The kids gutted it out, and they won it on the defensive end,” said Clawson. He goes on to say “that just shows you that when you play hard, good things happen.” Clawson could not say enough of how proud he was of his team.

The Cougars heart stopping win came on the heels of the Lady Cougars heartbreaking loss to Halls. A nine-point lead left quickly for the Campbell Lady Cougars as Halls took the momentum, the lead and the win on Brown Court. Halls won 53 to 50 Tuesday night after Cora Browning’s last second three attempt fell away.

Alyssa Brown was tops with 18 points followed closely by Cora Browning’s 16. Kayleigh Jordan chipped in eight while Izzy Proffitt scored four points with Megan Asher and Bailey Gillum scoring two each.

Campbell hosts Karns on Friday night in a rematch of a Cougar loss and a Lady Cougar win from last week.
