LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Most seasons, the La Follette High Owls would open its basketball season with an Alumni game. The 1972 season was no different as the old Owls played the current Owls.

One addition to this season’s Alumni team was Howard St. John. Many considered then and even to this day that St. John was the best to ever take the court for La Follette.

It was a time when the town would come out to see their Owls. Being a Saturday night (Nov. 11), it was a packed house.

The game was back and forth. The Jerry Dagley coached Owls hit what appeared to be the game winner as time wound down in the one-point game. The Alumni Owls came right back down court with St. John catching the ball in traffic in the lane, and he instinctively shot a turn around jumper as time expired. It swished through, and the Alumni Owls won.

I was trailing the play when St. John looked straight at me and said, “I didn’t mean to make that. I am so sorry.” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 01/22/2021-6AM)
