JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – “There’s a thing called will power, and these Cougars have it. They have the will to win. They don’t want to lose,” said Campbell Coach Ernie Mac Clawson after his team’s 65 to 62 home win over Powell. WATCH all the big plays right HERE on demand.

As snow fell outside, the Cougars and Panthers were going back and forth inside Brown Gym in a tight district match-up. With 2:23 to play, Devin Jones pulled Campbell to within one with a free throw, and then the Panthers threw the ball away. Nate Walden promptly came down court and nailed a three giving the Cougars the lead for good at 58 to 56 at the 1:45 mark.

Following Walden’s trey, Devin Jones had a big shot block and foul with Powell making the first free throw and missing the second as Seth Ward snagged the rebound. Jones then drove the baseline for a lay in at just under a minute pushing Campbell ahead 60 to 57.

With 40-seconds left, Ward knocked the ball away from a Panther and raced down the floor for a snowbird and was fouled missing the shot. He hit one of two free throws giving CCHS a four point edge of 61 to 57.

Next trip down the floor, a charge was called on a Panther as he scored a bucket. Then the official changed his call to a block. Powell converted making it a three-point play and carved the Cougar lead down to 61-60.

After a Campbell timeout, Spencer Boshears hit a field goal making it a three-point game. Powell matched Boshears field goal and immediately called a time out. Out of the time out, Powell fouled Walden with 12-seconds to play. He converted both free tosses giving Campbell a 65-62 lead. Powell missed at the buzzer, and the Cougars swept Powell in the regular season series.

LADY COUGARS

Second chance points and converted free throws by Powell were part of the undoing of the Campbell Lady Cougars this afternoon on Brown Court. CCHS fell to the Lady Panthers 44 to 40. Bailey Gillum hit a three at the buzzer.

Freshman Izzy Proffitt led Campbell with 10 points this afternoon followed by nine from Kayleigh Jordan with Bailey Gillum chipping in eight. Alyssa Brown scored seven as Cora Browning added four, and Megan Asher had two.

The Lady Cougars are 6 & 10 in all contests and sport a 5 & 6 district record. The Cougars record is 8 & 7 and in the district, it is 6 & 6.
