NEWPORT, TN (WLAF) – The Cougars and Lady Cougars alike started slowly Tuesday night at Cocke County. Very slowly. Each let the host teams on their homecoming night jump out to early double-digit leads.
The Lady Cougars dug out of their first quarter 15-2 hole and had a couple of chances to win or tie Tuesday night’s game in the closing seconds. However, Cocke County made free throws when it had to and won the white knuckler 47 to 46.
Freshman Izzy Proffitt recorded her first-ever double-double as a Lady Cougar with 16 points and 11 boards. Cora Browning posted 11 points followed by eight from Alyssa Brown, Bailey Gillum’s seven and four from Keely Nelson.
The Cougars spotted Cocke County a 10-point lead at 14 to 4 before the Orange-n-Blue decided to make a game of it with a 30 to 14 run. By the time the 4th quarter started, Campbell held a six point lead of 34-28.
The final frame was back and forth until Cocke County broke a 42-42 tie by nailing a three with four minutes to go to make it a 45-42 game. The Fighting Cocks pushed the lead out to 49 to 43 as Cougar Nate Walden fouled out with 90-seconds left.
Sloppy play did in the Cougars especially in the final two-minutes of play. It enabled Cocke County to score 15 of the last 20 points of the night enroute to a 57 to 47 win. Cocke County posted 28 points through the first three quarters and then outscored Campbell 29 to 13 in the final quarter.
Devin Jones led the Cougars with 13 while Nate Walden finished with 11 points. John John Long had a double-double of 10 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Spencer Boshears tallied eight points as Bryson Horton ended with three and Seth Ward put up a couple.
Back on Jan. 25 on Brown Court, Cocke County left town with a 60 to 55 win over the Lady Cougars while the Cougars claimed an 84-70 victory. The Cougars game was not as close as the score indicated.
The Lady Cougars are 9 & 12 in all contests and sport a final district record of 7 & 7. The Cougars record is 10 & 9, and its complete district mark is 7 & 7.
Campbell returns home to host Scott on Thursday night, homecoming night. Watch all the live televised coverage right here over the WLAF – Doyle’s Tire Shop Sports Network.
The seeding for the district tournament continues to fall into place though not yet finalized. However, both the Lady Cougars and Cougars will host first round district tournament games next week with dates and opponents still not determined.
