CHATTANOOGA, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – For the second time this season, the Walters State women’s basketball team travelled to Chattanooga to take on the 15th ranked Lady Tigers. Haley Comer, a former Campbell Lady Cougar, tallied six rebounds to go along with a couple of points and a steal, assist and block.

And for the second time, the Lady Senators came away with the victory.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lady Senators broke through with a 15-5 second quarter and closed the game out with an 18-1 fourth quarter, taking down the Lady Tigers 68-42.

The 42 points was Chattanooga’s lowest point total this season as Walters State held them to 17% from the field.

With the win, Walters State improves to 6-1 on the season and are 5-1 in conference play. The Lady Senators are on a six-game winning streak.

Madison Mccoy led the way for the Lady Senators with 22 points, a season-high. Along with Mccoy, Blayre Shultz had 16 points and six rebounds. Off the bench,

Kiera Hill continued her nice stretch of play with 12 points and five rebounds.

Walters State set the tone for the game right out the gate as Blayre Shultz drilled a 3-pointer just four seconds in and was fouled. From there, the two teams battled until the Lady Tigers went up six. The lead was 16-10 with two minutes to go, but a Ryann Woodley jumper and two Quentarra Mitchell free throws had it down to 18-14 after one.

Then, in the second quarter, Walters State really began to take charge as Mccoy took the game over. Mccoy scored the first 11 points of the second quarter as Walters State went up 25-18. Shultz broke Mccoy’s run with a layup to go up nine before Chattanooga State finally scored in the quarter with 3:42 remaining.

The Lady Senators held onto their lead and the score was 29-23 at the break.

The third quarter was similar to the first as both teams battled with Walters State outscoring Chattanooga State 21-18. Shultz had eight points in the quarter while Hill had six in just five minutes of work. Walters State led 50-41 after three.

In the fourth, Walters State immediately got their lead to double digits with two layups from Mccoy and a basket from Jaida Wiggins. The Lady Tigers called timeout, but the run didn’t stop there as Hill scored and then Wiggins scored to make it 60-42. From there, Walters State continued to put their foot on the gas and closed it out strong, allowing just a single free throw in the fourth.
