Flossie Mae Ayers Walden, known to most as “Granny,” age 95, of Stinking Creek

Flossie Mae Ayers Walden, known to most as “Granny,” age 95, of Stinking Creek, Tennessee, received her heavenly reward on April 3, 2021. She placed her faith in God who brought her through incredible challenges and blessed her with long life and a loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hansford Luther Walden, who died in a coal mining accident when she was 34 years old. But with strength from the Lord, she raised her six children and set an incredible example for them to follow.

In addition to her husband, Flossie was preceded in death by her parents, William Kelly and Mary Hattie Campbell Ayers, her sons, James Edward Walden and Jerry Lee Walden, her grandson Eric Walden, and her twelve brothers and sisters: Lydia Ann Ayers Owens, James Travis Ayers, Martha Elizabeth Ayers Dickerson, Clarence Delmas Ayers, Frank Taylor Ayers, Rosa Azlee Ayers Walden, Delmas Gene Ayers, and five siblings who perished in infancy, as well as special friend, Ed McCullah who “kept company” with her for many years.

She leaves behind a large family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. While it may seem like there are too many to name, Flossie called out all the names of her family daily in prayer. She loved her family. They were her greatest source of joy, and the legacy of her faith is found in her survivors:

Sons RL Walden and wife Faye, of LaFollette, Don Walden and wife Donna, of Williamsburg, Kentucky, Roger Walden and wife Margie, of Pioneer, and Daughter Joyce Johnson and husband Gary, of Jacksboro; Daughters-in-law Joyce Walden and Linda Reynolds; Grandchildren Michael Walden, Brian Walden, Jeremy Walden, Jana Evans, Amy Jo Ball, Pam Walden, Monica Bane, Tiffany Bruce, Christy Walden, Arron Walden, Beth Baird, Jason Walden, Elisa Singleton, Anthony Walden, and Brent Walden; Great-Grandchildren Dayne Walden, Dylan Walden, Brandon Cox, Dalton Raines, Abby Walden, Reece Walden, Reagan Walden, Olivia Walden, Bailey Hope, Hollie Taylor, Emery Ball, Easton Ball, Zack Walden, Brooke Bane, Jared Bane, Ainsley Bruce, Brynn Bruce, William Bruce, Clay Walden, Walker Walden, Reagan Stanfill, Emma Stanfill, Max Stanfill, Ryker Baird, Raylan Baird, Wyatt Baird, Emma Walden, Abby Walden, Ava Walden, Jacob Walden, Nathaniel Walden, Crew Walden; Great-Great Grandchildren Canaan Walden and Brooke Taylor–though there were many others who called her Granny whether they were related or not.

Additionally, she was survived by special friends Teresa Hatmaker and Clara Ayers who helped care for her in her final years. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Amedisys Hospice Services.

Flossie enjoyed simple pleasures in life such as going to town on Saturdays and getting her hair done. She enjoyed spending time with her family—especially the babies; she usually wouldn’t let anyone else hold them. Flossie liked to shop whether it was at a store, or whether it was in the closets of her daughters-in-law or granddaughters as she would famously look at their clothes and say, “I sure like that.” She was a cook at Stinking Creek Elementary School and Wynn School. She was a member of the Stanfield Church of God, where she faithfully attended for over 60 years. She loved her church, was a faithful prayer warrior, and famously cooked many dinners over the years.

Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at the new location of the Stanfield Church of God with funeral to follow. Rev. Delmus Bruce will be officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at Martin Wilson Funeral Home and go in funeral procession to Ayers Cemetery.
