The Campbell County Honor Guard presented the program at the courthouse veterans’ memorial. Campbell County Veteran’s Affairs Director Kevin Walden was once again the master of ceremonies for the event. Walden is retired from the United States Air Force.
The National Anthem was performed by Carol McDonald. A presentation of the meaning of the 13 folds of the flag was given by veterans Hugh Don Hatmaker and Ralph Smith.
The Memorial Day program also included a salute to all fallen veterans, as well as a presentation of wreaths.
This year’s special guest speaker was Campbell County Mayor and Desert Storm Veteran E.L. Morton. Morton is a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army. He spoke of the importance of Memorial Day and it’s true meaning and of the Campbell County men and women who have served their country.
“This county has sacrificed and stood the test of time … We have real heroes here in this county. Memorial Day has always been a time to reflect on those who have given their lives and gone before us,” Morton said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 06/01/2021-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
