CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – A man who could not get home because a car was sitting in the middle of Stoney Fork/Norma Road ended up calling E-911 Dispatch for assistance. Detailed in a report from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, 49-year- old Rodney Lee Carter of Cherry Street in La Follette was behind the wheel of a car, asleep, with his foot on the brake while the Mercury was still in drive.

Around midnight last Thursday morning Deputy Shayne Wilburn and Sgt. Josh Jeffers tapped on the window of the car and shouted “wake up.” Carter woke up and appeared startled not aware of what was happening, according to the report.

Wilburn said Carter told them he was just tired and did not need medical care, and that Carter did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Deputies asked Carter to step out of the car multiple times, and he did not. Jeffers attempted to unlock the passenger side door by sliding his hand through the partially opened window but could not, because Carter allegedly grabbed his hand and slapped it. When Wilburn broke the driver’s side window, Carter drove off.

Carter stopped a short distance away at Cemetery Lane. The deputies attempted to cuff Carter, and he jerked away, based on the report, before he was placed under arrest for felony evading arrest and resisting arrest. Carter is due in court tomorrow morning. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/14/2021-6AM)
