NASHVILLE, (SPECIAL TO WLAF) — With the beginning of a new school year right around the corner, State Rep. Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro) encourages families in Campbell, Union, and Anderson Counties to utilize the state’s annual sales tax holiday to save on items such as clothing, school supplies, and computer purchases.

The state’s annual Tax-Free Weekend is this weekend. It begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 30, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1. This holiday was established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2006 and has been held every year since; tax-free purchases include clothing valued at $100 or less, school or art supplies costing $100 or less, and computers priced at $1,500 or less.

“Our annual sales tax holiday is another way we are helping the citizens of our community meet the growing needs of their families while also saving more of their hard-earned money,” said Rep. Powers. “This event also supports our local businesses and sparks the economy right here in our region.”

This year, Powers and the General Assembly also approved a sales tax holiday on food, food ingredients, and prepared food. This holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021. The overall goal is to support sectors of our local and statewide economies that were hit hard by closures and limitations caused by COVID-19.
