DUFF, TN (WLAF) – The rain was pounding down not long before lunch time on Monday morning, but inside the B&B Market, the Nelsons, Jack and Sandy along with daughter Amanda, were hustling around a hot grill taking orders and dishing out food; that famed delicious food the community has come to love over these past 80 years.

The Nelson’s, Sandy and Jack, were honored on Monday by State Representative Dennis Powers with a proclamation from the state.

State Rep. Dennis Powers dodged raindrops as he kept a special document dry while making his way from his car to the front door of the eatery that sits next to the 25W underpass. Before placing his lunch order, Powers presented the Nelsons with a proclamation from the State of Tennessee.

In part, the proclamation reads “Now, Therefore, I Cameron Sexton, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the 112th General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, at the request of and in conjunction with Representative Dennis Powers, do hereby proclaim that we recognize and commend B&B Market on the occasion of its 80th anniversary and extend to its owners and staff our best wishes for every continued success.”

A surprised Nelson family put the brakes on their mid-day rush to graciously accept the honor and pose for a couple of snapshots. “Now what will y’all have?” Sandy asked.

Powers had no idea that he’d ordered up the largest cheeseburger in the county. It’s too bad the Gray Brothers, twins Gary and Jerry, weren’t on hand to watch their childhood pal Powers struggle to clean his plate.

Powers ordered up a cheeseburger and onion rings along with a Diet Dr. Pepper. Until Jack sat his order down on the table, the state representative had no idea just how big that burger actually was. “It goes a pound,” said Jack. Powers nodded in understanding as he tackled the biggest burger in Campbell County.

Powers, whose family started and ran the former 63 Drive-In on the east end of La Follette, applauded the Nelson’s efforts relating to the long hours he and his family invested in their restaurant. “We’re closing at noon on Saturdays now. I just have to have some time at home, and after Saturday’s traditionally huge breakfast rush, leaving at noon seemed like good timing,” said Sandy.

And by the way, today’s special is chicken. Better get there early. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 10/26/2021-6AM)
