NASHVILLE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – With the 2022 session of the Tennessee General Assembly underway, Rockwood native “J.R.” Russell is serving as executive legislative assistant in State Sen. Ken Yager’s (R-Kingston) office in Nashville. Russell has served in this capacity since July 2021 after initially joining Yager’s office as a legislative intern earlier that year.

“J.R.’s knowledge of the district and relevant issues as well as strong interpersonal and organizational skills and have made him an asset to this office and the entire Republican Caucus,” said Yager, who also serves in a leadership position as Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus. “Promoting him to his current role was an easy decision and I’m grateful he’s part of my team.”

In the role, Russell serves as the first point of contact for constituents when they call or visit Yager’s office, ensuring their needs are met and often forming important connections. Russell is an important part of the communications work in the office, and also conducts research and other duties related to the advancement of legislation.

“I’ve especially valued the relationship-building aspect of the job,” said Russell, noting his professional network has doubled since his promotion. “My knowledge of Tennessee politics grows every day and being a part of the legislative process under Sen. Yager’s leadership is incredibly rewarding.”

Russell graduated from Tennessee Tech before joining Yager’s office. He would also like to continue his education by pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy or going to law school.

J.R. is the son of Jeff and Brenda Russell and grandson of Ray and Johnnie Russell and Jane Bell, all of Rockwood.
