CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – “Man, I got nervous, because I have drugs in my backpack, and my license is suspended,” Nathaniel Jared Smith allegedly said to Campbell County Sheriff’s Sergeant Joe Weaver. Smith’s comments came late Sunday night after he wrecked his motorcycle into a mailbox.

Based on the report from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Weaver witnessed Smith fail to yield to traffic at the Highway 116 stop light and cross the center line upon turning onto Ridge Road. The sergeant suspected Smith was DUI (driving under the influence) and attempted to pull Smith over.

Smith did not stop after Sgt. Weaver turned on his blue lights, and he drove the motorcycle in the oncoming lane of the road, rounded a curve on Money Road and hit a mailbox according to Weaver’s narrative. Weaver notes that the 25-year old Smith was not injured.

Following Smith’s alleged comment about having drugs in his backpack, Sgt. Weaver discovered what appeared to be marijuana, methamphetamine and Suboxone strips without a prescription in the backpack.

Smith, 25, 827 Patty Hill Road, Caryville, was charged with failure to yield, drivers to exercise due care, schedule II drugs-manufacture-deliver-sell, possession of schedule IV controlled substance, driving while suspended and violation of the Tennessee financial law.

This was the Smith’s 12th arrest according to jail records. He is free this morning on a $90,000 bond and is due in court on Thursday. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/08/2022-6AM)
