MAYNARDVILLE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – State Rep. Dennis Powers announced Friday the Highway 33 Project from Maynardville to the Knox County line in Union County will begin next month.

Ground was broken on Friday for a project long in the making to expand Highway 33 from two lanes to four lanes from Maynardville to Halls. The project is set to begin in May.

Powers said it’s a $59-million three-year project that has been in the planning for many years. “We have been working on this project since I was elected in 2010, and it will be a great benefit for Union County‘s economy to link Union County with a four-lane road to the interstate in Knoxville,” said Powers.

Additionally on Friday, the representative announced a $ 9 million combination TCAT and Walters State Community College to be built on the the Union County High School campus. “This is another project we have been working on for five years and is going to be a model for the state in the future for rural counties,” said Powers.
