CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – An attempted traffic stop by a Campbell County Sheriff’s Sergeant began in Campbell County and later ended in Knox County with the arrest of a Clinton man. The pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

Around 3am Saturday, Campbell County Sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Jeffers spotted a white Jeep on I-75 that had allegedly been used in a felony theft. The sergeant saw the Jeep cross over the fog line at Mile Marker 132, a couple of miles south of Caryville, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop by using the cruiser’s lights and siren. But it was to no avail as the Jeep sped away.

The suspect was then identified as Brandon Lee Mayes of Clinton, Tennessee.

Based on the report from the CCSO, Jeffers saw the Jeep go from a speed of 55 mph to 96 mph and begin passing vehicles on the shoulder of the interstate continuing south. Jeffers soon paced the Jeep at 107 miles per hour. The Jeep then exited I-75 at the Clinton-Norris Exit 122 and headed left or east going through a grassy median and continued on Andersonville Highway where speeds were clocked at 80 mph. From Andersonville Highway, the driver of the Jeep, 33-year- old Brandon Lee Mayes of Clinton, allegedly led Jeffers through18 turns from one road to another before finally stopping on Sugar Pine Court at Powell in Knox County, just off the Norris Freeway.

Mayes, according to the report, abandoned the Jeep and began running. Jeffers chased Mayes about 20 yards before Mayes gave up.

Once in custody Mayes allegedly told Jeffers that the reason he ran was “because he had ice, Marijuana and Xanax powder in his underwear.” The report states that those items were found in Mayes underwear wrapped in several clear sandwich bags.

Mayes, housed in the Campbell County Jail without bond, faces more than 10 charges including evading arrest, speeding and drug possession. He’s due in court on Thursday. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/12/2022-6AM)
