CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – Just before 5am on Saturday morning, Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Preston Mullins came upon a pick up truck in the ditch on Highway 116 at Old Vasper Road.

As the deputy stopped to make sure the passengers were OK, he saw that the truck was damaged to the point where it was not drivable. Inside the Ford F-150 was one person, the driver, 45-year old Alan Wayne Patty. Patty told Deputy Mullins that he was not hurt, according to the report from the sheriff’s office.

As Mullins and Patty talked, the deputy noticed that Patty’s speech was allegedly severely slurred, and that Patty appeared to be very lethargic.

Patty, who lost his balance while trying to walk after getting out of the pick-up, explained to Deputy Mullins that he has had multiple surgeries over the years, and he was left with hindered walking abilities. When asked if he had drunk any alcohol or taken any medications or narcotics, Patty allegedly said he only takes prescribed medications. Patty provided the deputy with a list of the medications he takes, a total of 28 a day according to Patty. Oxycodone and Gabapentin were among the medications listed that Patty takes daily.

Deputy Mullins asked Patty if he was aware that the instructions on the medications advised to not operate machinery while taking the medicines. Patty allegedly replied that he did not know that his vehicle was considered a machine.

Patty, 45, Shady Cove Road, Caryville, was charged with DUI (driving under the influence) and is due in court on May 17. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/14/2022-6AM)
