CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – When Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Dakota Williams advised Steven Trotter that if he didn’t sign the traffic violation citation he’d be taken into custody, Trotter said, “I don’t have anything better to do tonight,” according to a report from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.

Before midnight last Wednesday, Williams stopped Trotter, 31 of Helenwood, after he drove out of his lane and over the speed limit. Williams said he saw Trotter pull out of Elkins Road, head west, and proceed to cross both passenger side tires over the fog line for about a hundred yards. Trotter was also paced at an alleged speed of 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Trotter stopped in front of Cove Lake State Park, and as Williams approached the 2005 Kia, he noticed that Trotter was not wearing his safety belt. Based on the report, Trotter responded by explaining he wasn’t wearing his safety belt because he had just pulled out on the main highway.

Williams advised Trotter that his signature on the citation was not an admission of guilt. Trotter refused to sign. Williams told him that if he didn’t sign, he’d be taken into custody.

Trotter was taken into custody and transported to the Campbell County Jail. Jail officials say Trotter was soon released, 12:13am, Thursday, on his own recognizance. He’s due in court on May 10. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/20/2022-6AM)
