LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – La Follette native General Carl Wade Stiner passed away on Thursday at a Knoxville healthcare facility. The man simply known around his hometown as “the general” served his community and his country in mammoth fashion.

I’ll always remember the day in the 1990s when Highway 63 was named for the general. Stiner stood in the rain, in full uniform, as others opened umbrellas. He thanked the community for the distinction and simply said, “When someone asks who is or who was Carl Stiner, tell them he was a country boy who grew up in this valley and had the honor to serve the greatest country on earth. Yes, just tell them that.”

Thank you for your service, General Stiner.

  1. He was my Dental patient here at Ft Bragg! Much Respect for him! Rip Soldier!

  2. I am sad to hear of Carl Wade’s passing. We were students together at both LHS and while in the ROTC program at TPI (not TTU). His service and achievements speak clearly of his character.
