LAFOLLETTE, TN. (WLAF)- Children at Wednesday’s LaFollette Library Summer Reading Program learned about the fire department and fire safety. The program was presented by the LaFollette Fire Department and included demonstrations of equipment and gear, as well as fire safety talks before concluding with a tour of a fire truck.
LaFollette Fire Chief Jimmy Pack showed children firefighting gear and discussed the different roles the fire department plays, not only in fighting fires, but in responding to wrecks and other medical emergencies. “Fire fighters get called out on much more than just fires. We average 1700 calls a year,” Pack said. LFD Firefighter Jeff Fugate talked to kids about fire safety, smoke detectors and what to do when one goes off in your home. Sparky the Fire Dog made a special appearance as well for fun photos.
Children got to see LaFollette Fire Fighter Dewayne Seiber in full firefighting gear and learn how his equipment protects him and enables him to save lives and fight fires.
The program finished with a quick tour of a fire truck and an overview of what the truck’s equipment was used for. “This has been a great educational opportunity for the kids,” said Librarian Nancy Green, who also said a “big thanks” to the LaFollette Fire Department.
