LAFOLLETTE, TN. (WLAF) -Teachers make a difference in their students’ lives each and every day. For many students, having a teacher who cares and goes that extra mile can be the difference in a successful education and graduation. We’ve all had that teacher who inspired us or helped in some way. That’s why WLAF and Eagle Tire Pros salute all of our hard-working educators with a weekly feature.

This week’s featured teacher is Mary Shelton. She is an assistant teacher at West LaFollette Headstart and has been teaching for three years.

Shelton is from LaFollette and grew up in the Ivy Dale area. She is married and has four kids.

According to Shelton, she always loved kids and wanted to get into education.  She began babysitting at a young age, before working at day care. Three years ago, she began at West LaFollette Head Start and “loves it.”

She works with kids ages three to five. Her favorite part of her job is the kids of course, who are “sweet and rotten.”
“It’s great to watch them learn and at that age, they are growing and learning in leaps and bounds. I love to see what they can accomplish when encouraged,” Shelton said.

Every Thursday, WLAF’s Charlotte Underwood features the WLAF – Eagle Tire Pros teacher of the week. That educator also receives a free oil change from Eagle Tire Pros. To nominate a teacher for teacher of the week honors, please send your nomination to wlaf@1450wlaf.com.

When she was growing up she had two teachers who really encouraged her.

“My two favorite teachers growing up were Mrs. Nance at West LaFollette Elementary and Mr. Greg Vincent, my art teacher at LaFollette Middle School,” Shelton said.
