JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – It’s rare a team scores a touchdown on the first play of the game and the last play of the game, but the Campbell Cougars did just that on Thursday night in a 54-48 overtime win over Clinton. Just for the record, it was Campbell’s first-ever win when playing on Mark Packer’s Rivalry Thursday telecasts.

Peyton Ferguson, the birthday boy, returned the game’s opening kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown, and it was game on. It took the Campbell Cougars ten-seconds to take the lead. With the game tied at 48, Campbell stopped Clinton in overtime followed by a one play overtime for Campbell. Cougar Landen Hensley threw a bullet to an angling Mason Shanks in the west end zone for the win. Four quarters and an overtime later, the Cougars clawed out a 54-48 win over arch rival and Region 3-AAAAA opponent Clinton. Watch the game HERE on demand from WLAF.

It marked the ninth win in the past 12 meetings for Campbell in the long running series with Clinton that dates back to 1975. The game totaled the most combined points in the series at 102, and it was Campbell’s biggest scoring game ever against the Dragons at 54.

The win bolstered Campbell’s playoff chances all the while snapping a two game skid in what has been a season of tight wins and tight losses. The Cougars are 4 & 3 with a 2 & 1 region mark while Clinton is 4 & 3 and 0 & 3 in its region contests.

Ahead for Campbell is a trip to Powell to face the defending state champs on Friday, Oct. 7. The Cougars and Panthers kick-off at 7pm while Clinton will be at home the same night and time against Lenoir City.
