LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – An elderly Campbell County man has passed after sustaining injuries from a bicycle accident that occurred on Nov. 4 in the Fincastle community. An official with the Regional Forensic Center at Knoxville confirmed that Bobby L. Atkins, 83, had been at their facility and was deceased.

According to a Campbell County Sheriff’s Department report, a call came in at 6:43 pm on Fri., Nov. 4 that a bicycle accident with injury had occurred in the area of 247 Thacker Drive, just off the Stiner Highway. According to the report, the call was initially described as a vehicle striking a bicycle, but after deputies arrived on scene it was learned that was not the case.  According to Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Robby Cobb, when he arrived at the scene, he found other deputies “attempting to render care to an unconscious elderly male who was lying on his left side” and had sustained a head injury.

The man was identified as Bobby L. Atkins. His wife, who had been notified by a neighbor, told deputies her husband was on medications.

According to the sheriff’s department report, Atkins was transported to UT Medical Center at Knoxville by air.

Cobb was told by other law enforcement on scene that “the call had been misreported and there had been no vehicle involved in the accident and that Mr. Atkins had fallen off his bike.”

A neighbor had wheeled the bicycle out of the street so the road would be clear. Cobb inspected the bicycle and according to his report, the bike was just two days old and the only damage to the bike was “minor scuffing to the left side, which would appear consistent with Mr. Atkins falling, or losing control of his bike.” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 11/15/2022-6AM)

  1. So sorry to hear of Mr Atkins passing. He was a fine person and best locksmith around. Any time I would need a key cut or lock opened for a motorcycle, even though he was retired and closed his shop all I had to do was call him and he’d drive down to the Honda Shop and take care of my request. Not even taking anything for his time. Afterwards him and Robert would talk for an hour or so. There’s just not that many people around and more. Prayers to the family, rest easy Mr Atkins
