KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF) – Campbell just couldn’t resist making Friday’s second game of the season a thriller even though it was on the verge of hosing down the Halls Red Devils in the third quarter with a 17 point lead. The final score really should have been 68-67 Campbell, but that’s just part of the drama.

Halls scored the first three points of the night only to see Campbell score the next 11. The Cougars went ahead for good at 4 to 3 though the game was tied at 55. Halls full court pressure brought the Devils back as the Cougars struggled getting the ball in play several times.

From the game’s only tie, Campbell scored 19 of the last 31 points to seal the win. During that run, sophomore big man Gavin Cox kept Halls at bay with tough buckets under the basket and a free throw.

Devin Jones missed his first four free throws of the night. However, he more than redeemed himself by making his last 11 free tosses, 18 of 24 for the night, to put the game away.

Halls last second bucket made it 68-67, and Jones was knocked down on the following inbound as John Long tried to work the pass in to Jones with 1.5 seconds to go on the game. It ended up being a foul and a technical foul. Jones made all four free throws, and was fouled as the Cougars tried to put the ball in play at mid-court. He then hit those two free throws for the final score of 74-67.

Jones and Jordan Day were double-figure scorers with 27 and 11 points respectively and unofficially. David Adkins scored nine while Cox totaled eight followed by seven from Long and four points by Adama Sanogo. Elijah McKinney and Will Lester tallied two each with Hyrum Hinckley posting a point.

Quarter-by-quarter, Campbell was ahead 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and then 32-22 at the half. The Cougars outscored Halls in the second quarter 10-8, 17-14 in the third. The fourth quarter went Halls way as it outscored Campbell 34-25.
