ONEIDA, TN (WLAF) – David Adkins scored the first two points of the night when Campbell visited the Indians at Oneida on Monday, and Gavin Cox rang up the final two points on a night when every point had to count. Sounds easy. But it wasn’t, because the Cougars let an 18 point second half lead slip away. Campbell County defeated Oneida 55-54 in overtime. Watch the game on DEMAND from WLAF.

Campbell was ahead by two at the end of the first and second quarters, 12-10 and 21-19 respectively. Then a seemingly close game became not so close as the Cougars posted the first 16 points of the third quarter to build an 18 point lead at 37-19. From there, Oneida scored 29 of the final 40 points in regulation.

The Indians took the lead back with 1:55 to play in the fourth quarter at 47-46, their first lead since it was 17-16 in the second quarter. Oneida made a free throw and was in front by two at 48-46 at the 1:21 mark. Campbell’s John Long powered home a bucket up front to knot the game at 48 with :36 remaining. Oneida had plenty of chances to make a game winner and just could not do it as time expired setting up overtime.

In the extra session, Campbell missed critical free throws and twice fell behind by four points, Oneida’s biggest lead of the night. At 54-50, Adkins steals the ball in front court, and at the other end, Jones scores on a driving lay up on the right side of the bucket with the left hand, 54-52. With 1:28 to go in OT, Jones makes the back end of two free throws on a shooting violation, and Campbell pulls to within one at 54-53.

On Oneida’s next possession, Jones drew his fourth charging foul, and this one was the biggest of the bunch. Because it sent the game’s high point man, Mason Keeton, to the bench with five fouls and 17 points. On the following possession, Jones missed a shot in the paint, and Oneida snagged the rebound. Before the Indians could get the ball out of backcourt, Long stole the ball. Jones missed a shot, and the ball was tied up on the rebound; possession arrow Campbell.

With :42 to go Jordan Day inbounded to Gavin Cox on the left side of the rim, and Cox knocked down a four footer giving Campbell its only lead in overtime 55-54. Oneida had its chances in the closing seconds and could not regain the edge as Campbell escapes with the win to move to 4 & 0.

Jones and Long were tops in the score column for Campbell with 14 points each. Gavin Cox tallied nine followed by Adkins eight and Day’s six. Adama Sanogo added four.
