WILLIAMSBURG, KY (WLAF) – Devin Jones knocked down a three, and it appeared the Cougars were off and running Friday night at Lawson Gym. Campbell and Whitely swapped early leads for a little while before the Cougars scored 11 straight points and built a 17-9 advantage.

Whitley tallied six points in a row to make it a two point game after one quarter with Campbell up 17-15. The Colonels gained the lead for good at 24-21 well into the second quarter. However, it was Campbell’s 10-2 run to close the half that kept the Cougar faithful hopeful. Whitley went to the locker room with a 37-33 edge.

A closer look at the first half reveals that Whitley covered a lot of ground in about a six minute span from late first quarter to the middle of the second quarter. The Colonels posted 20 points during that stretch of time to four for Campbell. That tone did not go away.

In the second half, you could see Campbell’s foul troubles and turnovers were slowly catching up with the Orange-n-Blue. Whitley kept Campbell at bay for the third quarter. Even though the Colonels held a 60-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the load of fouls wore on the Cougars along with miscues and missed shots. Whitley outscored Campbell 21 to 12 in the fourth quarter to claim an 81-61 season opening win.

Jones posted 19 points while John Long had another double-double with 11 and 11, points and rebounds as David Adkins added nine. Adama Sanogo finished with six points and six rebounds, and Luke Browning tallied five points. Gavin Cox and Hyrum Hinckley each scored four.
