POWELL, TN (WLAF) – Powell won the tip Monday night. Campbell’s Destiny Rutherford promptly stole the ball, and Lady Cougar Carley Kitts swished a three giving Campbell the lead in the first fifteen seconds of the game. Aside from deadlocks at five and seven, Powell was never able to go in front. The Lady Cougars scored seven straight points after the 7-7 tie.
Twice during the regular season, Powell overcame late game deficits to pull off wins at the expense of Campbell’s Lady Cougars. However, last night at Hunter Gym, Campbell’s 17 point third quarter lead held up, and the Lady Cougars came home with a 55-47 triumph and claimed third place in the District 3-AAAA Tournament.

Campbell built its lead to 15 at 35-20 just before halftime. Powell scored the next eight points, four to finish the second quarter and four to start the third quarter carving the Lady Cougars lead down to seven at 35 to 28. Campbell came back to life scoring 14 of the next 18 points to take its largest lead at 49-32.
Powell’s last run of the game was just short of catching Campbell even though the Lady Panthers chalked up 15 of the game’s final 21 points. The Lady Cougars went ice cold struggling to score four fourth quarter points as Powell had it down to a six point difference at 53-47 with under four minutes to play. Campbell’s Emma Brandenburg scored late giving Campbell some cushion at 55-47, and the Lady Cougars were able to hold on to the lead and the win.
With Kitts getting extra attention from Powell’s defense, the rest of the Lady Cougars made Powell pay. Saylor Hutcheson took the game’s high point honors with 17 followed by 15 from Bella Lester and 10 from Brandenburg. Kitts finished with seven while Reagan Davis and Rutherford hit a three-a-piece. Reagan Stanfill played and did not score.
Campbell is 14 & 17. Powell drops to 11 & 16. The postseason returns to sudden death on Friday when the Region 2 Tournament begins at the homes of the higher seeds. Campbell travels to Maryville to play Heritage while Powell ventures to Bearden.
Campbell did not put together back-to-back wins until it defeated Scott on Feb. 3 followed by a win over Carter. Those wins swelled into a four game winning streak through last week’s district tourney win past Central. The Lady Cougars have won five of their last six games including Monday’s Powell victory and a Feb. 9 home win against Sunbright.
Here’s how the other teams fared in District 3 and 4 on Monday night. At Farragut, the Lady Admirals defeated Maryville 55-47 to take third place in the District 4-AAAA Girls Tourney.
Oak Ridge broke open a close game to sew up the District 3 Championship by defeating Karns 65-47 at Powell’s Hunter Gym. Meanwhile, back at Sexton Gym, the defending state champion Bearden Lady Bulldogs moved to 31-0 with a 62 to 48 victory over Heritage on Farragut’s home floor.
Friday’s opening round of the Region 2 Tournament tips off at 7pm, and the bracket looks like this:
Campbell 14 & 17 at Heritage 24 & 6
Powell 11 & 16 at Bearden 31 & 0
Maryville 13 & 19 at Oak Ridge 20 & 9
Farragut 21 & 10 at Karns 19 & 12
The WLAF-Doyle’s Tire Shop Sports Network provides the live audio only coverage of Friday’s lone tournament game beginning at 6:50pm. That’s radio AM 1450 and FM 100.9 along with the live audio only over WLAF-TV 12. There are six other outlets where you can hear Campbell playing Heritage, and those are Roku TV, Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon Firestick and www.1450wlaf.com.

(WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/21/2023-6AM)
The Varsity Men may not have won district games; however, they proved that they could play with any teams I congratulate Ernie Clawson, his staff and his team for their outstanding season. They may lose about seven seniors; however, the ones returning will once again prove just how great of a team they will produce. I am a die hard Cougar fan win or lose and have been since 1975. God bless Coach Clawson, his staff and the Cougars. I look forward to watching them next year. Have a great remaining academic year and a fun-filled summer. Love you all.
