LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – After nearly 20 years without a Special Olympics Program, the competition is finally coming back to Campbell County.  Nearly 1-in-five individuals in Campbell County live with some form of disability, yet have had no true opportunities for recreation or competition.  Through the power of sports, people living with intellectual disabilities can discover new strengths, skills, and success.

The organization’s first event, track and field, is set for May 8th at Campbell County High School.  However, funding for things such as athlete medals and meals is needed to give participants a great experience.  A unique partnership with local law enforcement agencies is going to help fill that void.

On Monday, March 6th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, The Local will have some new faces serving as waiters and waitresses – police officers.  “Tip-a-Cop” is a fundraising event where police will volunteer their time as “Celebrity Waiters” to collect tips in support of Special Olympics.

Agencies involved include: Captain Stacey Wood-Heatherly and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sheriff Wayne Barton and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Freddie Stagnolia and the Caryville Police Department, Chief Daniel Smith and the Jacksboro Police Department, and Chief Steve Wallen and the LaFollette Police Department.

The organization’s first event, track and field, is set for May 8th at Campbell County High School.

“The Local is home to some of the best home cooked meals you will ever find” said Brandon Johnson, Chairman of Special Olympics Campbell County.

“We appreciate the restaurant’s owner, Carla Bolton, for trusting us with this crazy idea to raise money.  We hope that everyone will come out for a night of great food for a great cause.”
