LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Monday afternoon the LaFollette City Council met for the regular monthly workshop. Previously Councilman Wayne Kitts had discussed the idea of the city purchasing an electronic billboard to utilize as a revenue source. The 10 x 20 billboard would come at a cost of $75,000. There is a $30,000 installation fee. The city would need to apply for a permit for the billboard first, then have a survey completed. Today at 5:30pm, the board will vote on whether to move forward with the billboard or not.

A board member needs to be appointed to the LaFollette Utility Board. Kitts suggested appointing Joe Snodderly to the board.

Main Street Shell and Zoyal Market have applied for a beer license.

The council discussed the property adjoining the Campbell County Children’s Center. The center has requested a very small section of land to install a playground for the center. 

Freeman Park could soon have a new name. The name change would remove the word ‘park.’ This would enable restaurants who wished to serve alcohol to come to the downtown area. Due to the distance regulations of parks and establishments that can serve alcohol.

Mayor Cliff Jennings suggested the town have a city wide yard sale for one weekend, and the council will vote on the item tonight.

Two event permits will be on the meeting agenda for this afternoon, Coolidge Ridge Missionary Baptist Church and Alan Miller’s Ghostwalk. The annual fireworks display will be held on Sat., July 1.

The public works had three items on the agenda beginning with street paving. A bid of $1.175 million has been received from Rogers Group. The drainage project on Beech Street could begin construction soon. Today the council will vote on approving the rental of equipment for work on Brantley Lane. The cost for the rental will be $16,500 for a month. The equipment can be utilized on other projects as well.

Promoting Jared Dobbs to a full-time maintenance worker for the recreation department at a salary of $28,879.20 effective June 17 is on the agenda for the regular monthly meeting this afternoon.

Ordinance 2023-10 approval of the 2023-24 budget will have a first reading. Ordinance 2023-09 amending the purchasing policy for the City of LaFollette will have a final reading. Ordinance 2023-08 abandoning a portion of an up opened street located within South 16th Street will have a final reading.
