Peggy Louise Hatfield

(May 18, 1937 – June 05, 2023)

Peggy Louise Hatfield nee Thomas died suddenly on June 5, 2023, in Chicago, Illinois at age 86. Peggy was born May 18, 1937, in Jellico, Tennessee, and moved to Chicago, where she resided until her death, after marrying George Kelly Hatfield.

Surviving Peggy is her daughter Joyce. Her son Richard and daughter Anna predeceased her. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive Peggy:  Miguel, Maritza, Richard Jr, and Jonnathon. Peggy was a very generous person who worked hard in her life to provide for her children. She had a hard life as well, but she always put her children first.

She was also strong-willed. For example, when she was younger and a smoker, she decided one day to just quit smoking because the price had gone up to $0.99 a pack. Well, she did quit smoking “cold turkey,” without a nicotine patch or gum. Once she decided to do something, she did it, but it had to be on her terms.

Peggy was fiercely independent. She was the first of her siblings to move to Chicago. Her brother, Lowell, and sisters, Mildred and Carolyn, soon followed. Peggy came from a large family: LeRoy, Alta, Tommy Joe, Lowell, Richard, Carolyn, and Mildred. Richard is a surviving sibling. LeRoy died as an infant. Alta, Tommy Joe, Lowell, Carolyn, and Mildred also predeceased her.

Peggy never remarried but is survived by her longtime friend, Raymond Kendal.

Though Peggy’s health was failing, she still did her own grocery shopping and cooking with the aid of her grandson, Miguel. She loved food and was, in fact, a very good cook.

Visitation is from 1-4 PM Saturday June 24 at the Kristan Funeral Home 219 West Maple Ave. (2 blocks west of Rt. 45 on Rt. 176) Mundelein.  Funeral service will begin at 3 PM.
