JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Campbell started Friday’s home game with Gibbs just like it was drawn up. The Cougars took the opening kick-off and marched downfield to pay dirt.

It was a 12 play 83 yard scoring drive that consumed 5:41, the longest drive in yardage and in time of the game. Landen Hensley, on a 4th and goal at the four on the west end of Reynolds Field, found Gavin Owens in the end zone with a touchdown toss that was not an easy catch. Rylan Sanders point after touchdown put Campbell in front 7-0 at the 6:14 mark of the first quarter.

Gibbs answered with its own scoring drive. After multiple penalties, Gibbs scrimmaged from the one foot line for a two point PAT to go on top 8-7. A little kick-off misdirection gave the ball right back to the Eagles after a loose ball recovery. Gibbs cashed in on a 42 yard scoring drive to hold a 15-7 edge after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Gibbs capitalized on two separate 66 yard runs from scrimmage for scores to go ahead 22-7 and then 29-7.

Gabe St. John had the biggest play of the first half for Campbell on a 39 yard catch of a Hensley pass. It came in a promising second quarter opening drive that stalled after a sack followed by an interception. Gibbs was ahead 29-7 at intermission.

Gibbs scored first in the second half to build a 36-14 lead while Campbell capped a last minute of the third quarter drive with a Gavin Owens one-yard run for a touchdown. It was Gibbs 36 Campbell 14 after three.

Just like last week Hensley found Luke Lindsay running free down the south sideline and hit him in stride with a deep ball. Lindsay made the all alone grab and hustled to the west end zone for six. Sanders nailed the PAT, and Campbell carved it down to a 42-21 game with 10 minutes to play.

Gibbs would score two more times pushing its lead ahead to 56 to 21 before Campbell posted its final points. Hensley connected for a second time with Owens. This time, it was a 43-yard pass play along the north sideline stripe. Sanders PAT made the final score 56-28.

The most points Gibbs had given up before its meeting with Campbell was 24 to Halls. Friday night, the Cougars rang up 28 on the Eagles. Gibbs tallied three one-play scoring drives of 66, 66 and 47 yards.

Campbell loses for the fourth straight time to fall to 2 & 5 with a next Friday visit from region foe Karns. The Eagles of Gibbs go to 5 & 1, and they will host the Carter Hornets on Oct. 6. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/29/2023-10:30PM)
