The first of two wrecks happened at 5:17am Wednesday

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – A predawn wreck on Jellico Highway parlayed into a second accident on Wednesday, about two miles north of La Follette. As a result, traffic was slow going through that section of roadway. However, after the second incident, the road was blocked for the better part of three hours.

When WLAF News arrived on the scene of the accident in the 1200 block of South Highway 25W, there was a pick-up truck that had slid off the northbound lane toward an embankment and was still partially in the road. It appeared that black ice played a role in the incident.

After a sheriff’s deputy and ambulance arrived, it was discovered that there was a large area of black ice along Highway 25W. A TDOT crew was called in to treat the road.

Once the wrecked pick-up was loaded onto the rollback wrecker, the wrecker slipped off the road and down an embankment. The road had to be closed while TDOT treated the highway and another wrecker arrived to retrieve the other wrecker and its load.

Jellico Highway, also called State Route 9 and Highway 25W, was closed from around 6:30am until just after 9:30am. One person stuck in the traffic estimated vehicles were lined up for a couple of miles in each direction.

There were no injuries. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/14/2024-10AM)
