It was quite the hostile environment when the Jellico Blue Devils squared off last Tuesday night with Oliver Springs on the Bobcats home court. Though Jellico won on this same floor back in December, Tuesday night’s game was completely different, because it was for the district tournament championship.

Oliver Springs lost only three district games, counting last night’s, and all three defeats came at the hands of Jellico. Tuesday night, the Blue Devils won for the 18th time on the season with the 73-63 victory.

Traditionally, Jellico would have hosted a home opening Region 2-A game last Saturday night by virtue of Tuesday’s district tourney win. “Due to Oakdale and Greenback being banned from postseason play, we drew a bye for the first round of the region. On Tuesday, at Harriman, we’ll play Midway, a 74-41 winner over Wartburg in the semi-finals of the region on Saturday night,” said Jellico Coach Mike Reynolds.

Jellico’s game on Tuesday starts at 6pm at Harriman High. The Blue Devils are 18 & 10 while Midway is 12 & 16.

On December 15, at Oakdale, in a game between Oakdale and Greenback, a fight in the stands between spectators broke out with under a minute to play and Oakdale ahead by 11 points triggered more fighting, according to reports. In January, the TSSAA handed down a post season ban on both schools, placed each school on probation for the next two sports seasons and levied monetary fines. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/26/2024-6AM)
