Jellico will play in its first-ever state basketball tournament on Mar. 13, at MTSU in Murfreesboro

JELLICO, TN (WLAF) – Jellico may just become a ghost town come next Wednesday and rightfully so. Everyone wants to be a part of the history this 16th version of a Mike Reynolds coached basketball team is making. Jellico’s 65-59 win at Johnson City over University High on Monday night vaulted the Blue to the Elite 8 of next week’s state basketball tournament.

There were three ties and nine lead changes over the 32-minute course of last night’s sectional game at Brooks Gym on the ETSU campus. University found its stride after Jellico surged in front 42 to 39 late in the third quarter. U-High reeled off 11 straight points from the third quarter into the fourth period to go up 50 to 42, its largest lead of the game.

However, the fourth quarter belonged to the Blue. Jellico locked in and dominated the final seven minutes scoring 23 of the final 32 points to record the five point victory, its largest lead.

The 24 & 9 Frank Hughes Lions of Clifton, a Wayne County (middle Tennessee) school, will take on Jellico in the late game on Wed., Mar. 13, at 9:45pm EDT. WLAF and WJJT will provide the live radio coverage of Jellico throughout the state tourney. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/05/2024-6AM)
