First District Commissioner Robert Higginbotham read a proclamation thanking teachers, administrators and other school staff for their hard work over the past year despite the challenges of the pandemic. The proclamation declared May 17, 2021 as a day of recognition for all Campbell County School staff.
“We would like to thank all the teachers, administrators, janitor staff, and food service staff from all the schools for all that you do, have done and will do in the future,” Higginbotham said. He also presented plaques for each of the 12 schools in the district. “Our education professionals have worked very hard during the pandemic; organizing and planning plus providing virtual learning and much more.”
Higginbotham also said he wanted to “commend the school board for a job well done with the planning and organization through trying to get our schools safely opened. Also a big thank you to the parents and guardians of our students that actually utilized their time through the day to teach their kids through the virtual learning process.” A separate proclamation was read in recognition of Director of Schools Jennifer Fields for her guidance during the pandemic and her “unselfish devotion” to the county’s schools.
Fields spoke briefly saying the “real heroes were the teachers, custodians and food service personnel.”
“Thank you to the county commission for all your support you give the schools and thank you to the school board for their support in our efforts to keep schools open this year. The true heroes behind all this aren’t actually here tonight; those are the teachers, the custodians, the food service personnel, the secretaries and all the staff that keep the schools running,” Fields said.
Fields also commended the principals and administrators who were in attendance, saying they had “served as teachers when substitutes couldn’t be found, they cleaned their buildings and worked in serving lines to serve food. It was truly a team effort, not just with the schools, but with the whole community.” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/18/2021-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLOTTE UNDERWOOD)
