LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – The World Series began last night, and all the games are night games; nothing new. But thank goodness that wasn’t the way it was back in 1968. The games in those days were played in the afternoon.

If you attended La Follette Junior High on West Central Avenue, you likely had Burton Nevils for 7th grade science. You may also remember that Mr. Nevils was a baseball fan. When you were in his afternoon classes, which I was, you got to watch the World Series.

As you face the school, Mr. Nevels class was on the second floor on the right, the backside room. He also had the room next to his classroom that looked down over the auditorium.

That was one of the best series I can remember except the years the Reds won, especially in 1975. It was Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals versus Denny McClain and the Detroit Tigers. I was pulling for St. Louis. My pal Denny Orick was a Tigers fan. I felt sorry for Denny especially after the Cardinals took a three games to one lead. However, it wasn’t long before I wasn’t feeling sorry for Denny anymore. Those stinking Tigers battled back and won the 1968 World Series.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Nevils. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 10/27/2021-6AM)

  1. Yes, I too watched the World Series in Mr. Nevils “backroom” that overlooked the auditorium. He would throw a rubber ball at us, if we didn’t pay attention, which was not often- he was great teacher. It was the 1965 Series (same year we won the State Championship) and Sandy Koufax was named the MVP with 3 wins and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins in 7 games. We also had an egg incubator in the backroom to hatch chickens. 🙂
