LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Back in the 1950s and 60s, on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon, after warm weather arrived, this (photo above) was one of the busiest places in Lafollette. It was located near the corner of West Central Avenue and South 13th Street on the Lyons Trading Center parking lot.

You could regularly count on a carnival like atmosphere where there would be something fun to ride. It could be a Farris wheel, Merry Mixer or Horse Carousel, but whatever the ride was, it attracted young and old alike.

Along with the ride, Lyons also sold hand dipped ice cream, soda pop and candy. “Walter Lyons knew how to attract and please a crowd,” said WLAF’s Charlie Hutson. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/05/2022-6AM)

  1. And… he was considered nuts for building a store that far outside of town.
