LAFOLLETTE, TN. (WLAF)- As record-breaking weather heads to Campbell County, the LaFollette Utility Board is making plans.

Normally, LUB would have one crew on standby in the event of an outage. With the predicted artic weather, that is being changed to three crews. While the cold weather has the LUB staff on alert, General Manager Kenny Baird said it is the potential for high winds that LUB is focused on. The combination of winds taking down power lines and trees mixed with below freezing temperatures could cause the biggest problems.

When power is lost in extremely cold temperatures for an extended period of time, a “cold load pick up” occurs, he said. A cold load pick up taxes an already strained system and can result in another outage.

“Don’t use what you don’t have,” Baird said. The more electricity used stresses the power grid.

LUB has 23,000 electric customers, 10,200 water customers and 3,600 sewer customers. All consumers are advised to use less power in the coming days and let the faucets drip to avoid freezing.

In the event of an outage, Baird said those can be reported by calling 423-562-3316 or online at www.lub.org or on the LUB app. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED 12/22/2022- 6AM)
