Commissioners recognized Jellico Elementary School Boys’ Basketball team on Monday, declaring April 15th as Jellico Elementary Five Time Champion Day!

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Proclamations for Jellico High School, Jellico Middle School and Jellico Elementary School Basketball teams were made at the start of Monday’s commission meeting in recognition of the athletic achievements of all three schools. 

Elementary Basketball players were recognized first by the commission. Several players and Coaches Ryne Cummins and Garrett McNealy accepted the award.

County Mayor Jack Lynch read the Proclamation aloud and declared April 15th as Five-time champion Day. 

“Whereas the Jellico Elementary Team battled to a season championship win over the White Oak Wildcats won their fifth small-school division championship in a row. And whereas the Blue Devils were proudly supported by their student body, the teachers, fans, parents, coaches, administration, and the whole Jellico Community. Now therefore due to their total dedication and love of this game, this legislative body proudly names today, April 15th, 2024, as Jellico Blue Devils Five Time Champion Day!”

Each player was presented with a copy of the proclamation.

Coach Garrett McNealy spoke and thanked the commission for their support and recognition. He also thanked Coach Ryne Cummins for “helping out tremendously” and said he was proud of the boys.

The Jellico Middle School Boys’ Basketball team was recognized next, with April 16th, 2024, declared as Jellico Middle School Blue Devils Day.

Campbell County Commissioners honored Jellico Middle School Boys’ Basketball team on Monday night, declaring Tuesday, April 16th as Jellico Middle School Blue Devils “They Don’t Want the Smoke” Day!”

The Middle School Boys’ team is coached by Gage Hyslope and Garrett McNealy.

“Whereas the Jellico Blue Devils Middle School Boys’ Basketball Team prevailed with great effort to be the district champion by defeating Oneida with a score of 36 to 33 and capping off a season record of 17 to 9. And whereas the Blue Devils were proudly supported by their student body, the teachers, fans, parents, coaches, administration, and all of the Jellico Community. Now therefore due to their dedication and love of the game, this legislative body proudly names Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, as Jellico Middle School Blue Devils “They Don’t Want the Smoke” Day!” Commissioners presented players with a copy of the proclamation.

Gage Hyslope spoke briefly, also thanking commissioners for their support and their recognition.

We took a lot of smoke throughout the season, but we prevailed, and we improved a lot. They worked hard, took a lot of beatings, but eventually we figured it out. We appreciate the recognition,” Hyslope said.

The Jellico Blue Devils High School Boys Basketball team was recognized as well for making history and making it to state! Many of the players were absent due to playing in a district baseball game.

The Jellico High School Blue Devils are coached by Mike Reynolds and Gage Hyslope.

Before reading the final proclamation, County Mayor Lynch said it was an honor for the commission to recognize these athletes.

The Jellico High School Boys’ Basketball team was recognized by county commissioners at Monday’s meeting. Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, was declared as “Jellico High School Blue Devils’ Record Breakers and History Makers’ Day.”

“Whereas the Jellico High School Boys Basketball Team were the district 3A champions, Region 2A runner up and advanced to the TSSAA Elite 8 for the first time in school history. And whereas the Blue Devils were proudly supported by their student body, the teachers, fans, parents, coaches, administration, and all of Campbell County. And now, therefore, this legislative body proudly names Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, Jellico High School Blue Devils’ Record Breakers and History Makers’ Day.”

“I’m proud of our kids, our community and all of Campbell County for how they supported us. We were glad that we were able to do something that not only reflected well on our school and our community, but our entire county; thank you for this recognition,” said Coach Mike Reynolds.
