PIONEER, TN (WLAF) – A third party caller alerted the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department about a possible wrecked and abandoned car on Highway 297 at Pioneer. Deputy Christopher West was dispatched to the scene around 4 pm on Mon., Jan., and found a 2002 silver Honda Civic to be abandoned and could not find the driver.

While he was at the scene, Charles Towing arrived with the driver of the Honda and the car’s registered owner, the driver’s wife. The driver was identified as 60-year- old Johnny M. Overton. A check of his license came back as revoked for a previous driving under the influence charge. Overton had three prior driving under the influence charges, according to a report from the sheriff’s department. At this point, Overton was given a series of field sobriety tests that he failed. He was then asked if he had taken any drugs or drank alcohol that would’ve put him under the influence. Overton allegedly told West he had taken a prescribed Xanax earlier that morning and takes one every morning.

A search of the vehicle revealed two 6.8-ounce containers of alcohol in the trunk. He then found a cold and sealed Smirnoff alcoholic beverage at the scene where the vehicle was found.

Overton, of 8207 Hwy 297 Pioneer, was charged with driving under the influence (4th offense), driving while revoked/suspended (3rd offense) and other. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/04/2021-6AM)
