CARYVILLE, TN. (WLAF)- Monday night at the gathering of the Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the meeting room was standing room only. The topic that drew the crowd was the future of School Street, the name of the street according to central dispatch. The Caryville Cares Playground Committee would like to see the road changed to a one way street to accommodate parking for the new inclusive playground.

Caryville resident Eugene Lawson spoke to the board about his opposition to making the road a one-way street. It appeared that Lawson’s greatest concern was it would change his path of travel from his home. Brandon Johnson, chairman of Caryville Cares, discussed creating parking spaces vertically to accommodate the handicap accessible vehicles. While David Muse with the Caryville Public Works Department reported the road is only about 24 ft wide and 465 ft long with a 68 ft right of way, which is 34 ft on each side from the center line.

The question was raised by members of the Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen as to what the parking plan had been from the start of the project for parking. Johnson said the plan had always been to make the street a one-way street for safety reasons. Former Aldermen Eric Smith was present at the meeting. His understanding was the original plan was to make a parking lot at the ballfield. After a 90 minute discussion, there was not a resolution to the problem at hand.

Alderman Josh Monday was appointed as liaison for the board. The intent of the liaison is to help the project to continue moving forward. The meeting was adjourned in session until a solution to the parking issue can be found.

In other business, the board chose an official town logo that will show Cove Lake and the mountains. The board approved the police department applying for a bullet proof vest grant. The grant is a 50-50 match, the cost of each vest is approximately $800.

Two ordinances had a second reading. Ordinance No: 2023-01 amending the annual operating budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022, and ending June 30, 2023, and Ordinance No: 2023-02 amending the zoning map of the Town of Caryville, by rezoning parcel 120J A 063.00 from R-1, Low Density Residential, to C-2 General Business District.

Noah Pierce was hired full- time in the street department after his 90-day probationary period.
